Through the 1st winter update (prior to basketball, men's swimming, after women's swimming, wrestling) A&M is ranked 20th with 335.5 points.

1. Stanford-674
2. Penn State-528.25
3. Florida State-505.50
8 Oklahoma 431.75
13 Texas 395.00
14 Oklahoma State 391.50
20 Texas A&M 335.50
26 Nebraska 294.00
31 Missouri 270.50
43. TCU-237.25
45 Colorado 231.00
51 Texas Tech 205.00
53 Iowa State 186.50
60. SMU-158
64 Baylor (Tex.) 150.25
78 Kansas State 131.50
103 Kansas 86.50

Pretty good considering we were in 56th after a (typically) dismal fall season.

Only three schools have more points in the "winter" section than us so far: Stanford, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. In the "winter" standings, we'll jump Minnesota and Wisconsin by the next update (which is tomorrow), though not likely Stanford.

Should pass Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the overall standings for 2nd in the Big 12, though still probably behind Texas.

Ouch for Baylor and Tech.

Ags vault into the top 10! We're now ranked 9th, 37 points behind Texas for 8th.

For reference, 37 points is approximately equivalent to a 30th place finish, or the difference between losing in round 1 and losing in the sweet 16 in men's basketball.

with golf, tennis, baseball, and track, it would appear that we can pass them and finish in top 5, no?

Odds of cracking the top 5 are VERY slim. Would require catching Florida State, who's also very good at track and decent at baseball, or UNC, who just won the ACC Golf title, has the no. 5 ranked baseball team, and a lot of bonus points from having 24 events (only 20 are counted) to replace weaker sports, whereas we don't. (Lacrosse, women's rowing are yet to be factored in).

In other words, we could outscore any of them in the Spring trimester, but making up the ~150 points would be really tough. Catching Texas is within reach though, will hinge a lot on tennis.

4/26/11 Stanford leads BUT taking out Gymnastics, fencing and wrestling - which A&M doesn't have- A&M has 420 points to Stanford's 377 !

That's only the winter totals though...Stanford has twice as many total points as we do, and will probably end the year with a higher per-sport average than us (remember they're capped at 20).

Right now they're pulling down about 70 points per (even if you include Men's BB, where they didn't make the tourny). We're at about 50.

We are an Ag school...I guarantee we could build a better fence than some CA school! Especially if we could put together a barbed team!

Picket is popular too.

In all seriousness though, in the past, A&M has had some serious National caliber fencers attend the University, and like everywhere else, the Aggie Network is strong through the 'former aggie fencers.'

I know the club team still competes at a very high level on the club circuit, so it's a shame that fencing is one of the sports that hurts us by not having it.

I mean, fencing specifically doesn't necessarily "hurt" us by not having it, moreso than any other sport does. I believe we have 9 men and 10 women that count towards the thing...of a max 10 and 10. So any one sport (that we exceled in) would help. Of course, having more than 20, programs like Stanford get to pick their 20 best programs, which always helps. I think it's more this lack of bredth in athletics programs that hurts the Big 12 schools (which is one reason why I think Nebraska, with its 23 programs, fits in better with the Big Ten than the Big 12.) We keep it pretty traditional down here, and don't stray too far into the non-name sports. Surprising there's not more wrestling and rifle programs in Texas, for example.

We don't have wrestling (or other sports like it) because we don't have the money to fund it. And if we added it, we'd have to add a women's sport.

What surprises me is that Texas doesn't fund more sports since they have $70M more to spend than we do. I guess they gotta have the latest Xbox games in the athlete's lounge.

Texas has very few HS Wrestling teams. Move up north and every high school has a very competitive wrestling team.

Perhaps more HS wrestling in Texas than some think....

Lots of big schools on those lists - Southlake Carroll, Westlake, etc.

Wrestling is pretty popular where I come from (Arlington ISD), and I think it's a similar situation throughout most of D/FW. I don't know how serious it is down in the Houston area.

St. Thomas won the Houston All-City Championship. Cinco Ranch also has a really good program. I think it's definitely a sport on the rise down here...especially with all of the football players. James Aston (former Katy running back) was like a National Champion wrestler.

It oughta be HUGE in Texas. You know how football coaches make everyone join the track team in the offseason at most Texas HS's? Well, imagine if you could make your speed players join the track team...and put your linemen on the wrestling team. There's a little too much overlap in the seasons to make that really effective...but if the UIL pushed it back a few weeks, it could be a golden opportunity.

I wrestled in HS. The difference is that in the Midwest those guys start training for wrestling when they are in elementary and middle school, whereas in TX almost every school only has a wrestling program at the high school level.

We went up to a wrestling camp in Illinois one summer, and we got dominated. Our best wrestler was a TX state champion, and was pretty athletic overall (went to college on a track scholarship). He went up against an Illinois state champion and it wasn't even close.

By my up to date calculations, Texas A&M currently sits in 7th place through all completed sports and through baseball regionals. I have all teams currently playing in super regionals at 9th place finish in baseball and will updated based upon who moves forward and how the CWS unfolds.

There are only three possible scenarios for A&M final standings:

Virginia would pass A&M by winning the CWS (A&M finish 8th)
FSU would pass A&M winning the CWS (A&M finish 8th)
Neither Virginia or FSU wins CWS (A&M finish 7th)

Lose today to ASU, will end 13th. Win today, no worse than 12th. Win CWS, finish 11th.

Top three Big 12 finishes will be A&M (more than likely 7th), Oklahoma (more than likely 8th) and tu (more than likely 12).

Stanford has 36 freakin' teams. Of course they win every year. These results need to be averaged by the # of teams each school fields (you'd have to set a minimum at like 12).

We would destroy in a format like that.
AnalogyAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I thought it took 10 teams in both mens and womens.

Dont we have 19 and they have 20?
dcaggie04
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Analogy, that is true. But for us, we have 9 men's and 10 women's sports total. Stanford has more than 10 men's sports and more than 10 women's sports that count toward the director's cup standings. They can only count 10 men's sports and 10 women's sports. So we have to use every single sport we play to calculate our total. Stanford can pick the top 10 sports for each gender that they finished high in.

Many schools, like A&M and tu, don't have that luxury.
CDub06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Exactly. They get to throw out somehting like their worst 5 performances for each gender. We have to use all of ours (good and bad) and STILL have one fewer entry on the men's side.
AGBlastoff
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Valid point. I think even if you counted all of their sports, and did a per-sport average, Stanford would probably still come out at the top, or close-to-the-top, every year.

CDub, did you know that you were on TV??
