If any rugby fans are here, the College Premier Division championship is Saturday on ESPN3.com. Not certain of the time. It involves Cal and BYU, the two powers as it were in that sport in this country, not exactly a rugby power, but still.
Our club is one of the 31 teams in the premier division. We played in the semis last year and lost to Utah. Cal and Byu are perennial top 5 clubs in the country.
Cal has an endowment-type scholarship program I believe. Word is an extremely rich parent lost his son (a Cal rugby player) and wanted to make sure the program for which his son loved had funding forever.
Love their pitch. Great atmosphere for rugby. Went there in 2003 and their rugby attendance was better than the football team's. Of course, Cal football is a bit different now.
I think A&M has a similar program available to its sports clubs...once you raise a certain amount of money (I think it's like $5,000) they'll set up an endowment. Definitely something all Club Sports should look into.
We currently have established an endowment plan and are offering some scholarship money to the players. If you are interested in helping, go to TAMUrugby.com and get more info.
Derrida- I coach rugby at USAFA. I can promise you we don't get "scholarships" for our players. Hell, the Academy barely supports us, and we are in the Premier League as well...Unfortunately in the same division as BYU and Utah.
