Can we get a look at the new outdoor stadium that Henry designed?

He has worked with architects and designed his dream stadium. I know it hasn't been approved, but I would LOVE to see what his vision looks like.

That's pretty cool but where are the ribbon boards??!!!!

I will say the crowd at Drake was abysmal. They need to send the championship where people will attend.

They need to bury that sucker as much as possible...then have thousands of mist fans for the crowd and athletes.

I just gave my small amount to the 12th Man Foundation earmarked for Track & Field. If everybody gave a small amount it wouldn't finance the thing, but it would certainly send a message. It's very easy. Go to the 12th Man Foundation website and click on "Major Gift/Make A Gift". Don't worry, my gift was anything but "Major".

We need to support the best coach we have on campus.

Now that is a track stadium!

Looks like coach Henry wants to make sure there are enough sprint lanes on the practice track for all the hosses to run!

Even with that stadium our location just doesn't seem like a good place for nationals due to the heat... but it'll be nice hosting meets a little earlier in the year.

We've hosted the NCAA tennis championships here in late May/early June. Yeah it's hot, but that won't keep them from hosting here with a facility like that.

Heat is not bad for sprinters.

Did lack of practice on a good outdoor track lead to BOTH Ag women hurdlers falling?

None of the others fell!

No, the practice track isn't THAT bad except over by the runways for the jumps.

I didn't see the race, so I couldn't tell you why they fell, but I doubt it was surface-related.

A couple of comments about Des Moines--- The host people are great. They have a good support staff because of the Drake Relays tradition. They have a good officiating base to work with. They usually put about 20K in the stands for the final days of the other NCAA and Drake Relays. Factors that had an effect this year was the weather -- the first three days we had hours of rain delays. The 2nd item was that UIowa, ISU and Northern Iowa did not have many competitors. a drawback at Drake was they went to field turf a few years back and that took most of all the throws outside the stadium and splits the crowd.
We need a stadium that hold about 25K in order to host a c'ship. The throws should all be inside the oval on natural grass. I always like the design of Anderson track with the LJ/TJ runways and pole vault runway in front of the main stands in order for the spectators to have a full view and something to watch. T&F has its problem with too much down time for many of the fans and the design of the venue is important -- that is why Eugene is the best in the USA.
A problem we have at College Station is the prevailing winds in May and early June are from the south and that puts the main finish line in the NE corner and facing the sun in hot track weather. The other major problem is the lack of hotel space - if we get a major outdoor c'ship - we need to clear the book and have nothing else going in CS at that time. TAMC is still a small town when it comes to national competition.
We still have a long way to go to match the fan support at Eugene and Des Moines.

Coach Henry is very mindful of the fan experience and I'm sure the outdoor facility, like the indoor facility, will be designed with that emphasis.

I doubt this will be a problem. We may be a small town, but we have way more hotel rooms than the average town our size. I think our airport would be a bigger problem than our hotel situation.

This needs to happen, and I am supporting financially.

We are building a loyal fanbase, and it will take a bit of time to generate numbers. Many of us know T&F by personal experience, so there is a understanding of the excitment T&F can bring. In high school it was always one of big 4 letters (football, basketball, baseball, and track).

That's not 20k at the same time though, that's 10k for one day and 10k for the next day.

We really just need a stadium that holds 15k. The Drake stadium holds 14,557, Hayward Field holds just 10,500, Arkansas only holds like 7K.

I think the Texas Relays and/or the UIL champs have drawn close to 20k on day 3. I'd build for 17-20k, even if you don't anticipate being able to fill it up for awhile. I figure it's going to be easier to get the money and it'll be cheaper to get it all done upfront.

Far from comprehensive, but here are some other numbers from 2010...

(It's correct to say Drake pulls over 20k a day, but they split the Fridays into two sessions.)

quote:
Single-day attendances
54,310 Penn Relays, day 3 (meet record)
38,904 Penn Relays, day 2
24,132 Penn Relays, day 1
14,501 Drake Relays, day 3
12,298 Drake Relays, day 2 afternoon session
11,510 Millrose Games
11,022 Drake Relays, day 2 evening session
7,036 Oregon Relays, day 2
6,732 Oregon Relays, day 2
6,118 Oregon Twilight
5,918 Oregon Preview (meet record)
5,769 Drake Relays, day 1
5,321 Pepsi Team Challenge
5,209 Men of Oregon v. UCLA
3,150 USATF Indoor Championships
2,038 Pacific-10 Championships, day 2
2,033 Pacific-10 Championships, day 1

Those Penn Relay numbers are impressive

Still don't think we need more than 15k though.
