The volleyball roster is up and the season starts in less than a month!

There are a few unexpected newcomers on the roster.

Hannah Hood is the only listed freshman, a 5'-9" DS/OH from Westlake High School, and I'm guessing she's a walkon since to my knowledge we didn't have any available scholarships for this class. I wouldn't expect her to get much playing time with Mellinger, Pendergast, Grace, and Kinley all ahead of her.

Megan Pendergast is a transfer from Nebraska who is originally from the Houston area. She is listed as a 5'7" DS/L, and was a very highly rated recruit coming out of high school. She actually suited up and played as an outside hitter in one or two matches at Nebraska due to some injuries and had some decent success for such a small player. She has great hops and a strong arm, and was known at Nebraska as a very powerful although somewhat inconsistent server. I think she will definitely make a push to be the starting DS and could possibly see some time as Libero or even as an Outside Hitter.

Markie Malone is a transfer from BYU. She is listed as a 5'-11" setter. According to her bio on aggieathletics she was with the team last year but did not play. She is a junior by eligibility, and was a very highly recruited player before originally choosing BYU. Her resume is impressive, but she is probably gonig to have a tough time breaking into the lineup behind all Big-12 freshman team performer Allie Sawatzky and another established setter in Allie Freiwald. Always good to have other options though and she will definitely push the other two in practice.

Cinthya Roberto comes to us via 2 years at Blinn College and 1 year at Florida. She is listed as a 6'-0" Outside Hitter and for some reason her class year isn't listed, although I'm assuming she only has one year of eligibility left since she has already used three. Unfortunately I do not know whether she was released at Florida or if she has to sit out this year. She definitely played some at Florida last year, although likely not as much as she had expected, since Florida had quite a dearth of quality outside hitters. She was a two time junior college all-American (the first in Blinn Volleyball History) and won a Junior College National Championship in 2008. If she is eligible to play this year she could really help out on the outside opposite of Kelsey Black. She was known for her ball control at Florida but I would imagine she is also a more dynamic attacker than Ringel. Either way she definitely gives us another good option and will provide quite a challenge in practice to the existing outside hitters.

Would love to hear from anyone else who has some insight on these players or if anyone has been going to practices and has seen the new players play in person.

drumbeat, do like this years teams chances of getting into the tourney?

They were a young team last year, so hopefully they can build on it.

Also, what are your thoughts of the vb team in the SEC vs B12?

Husker fan here. I've been trying to find out where Megan Pendergast went, because if they've covered in the local papers, I've missed it. I'm glad to see she found a school near home.

Megan is a very nice person, great teammate, and a very good athlete. She is small at 5'7", but she has big-time ups. She is a very good defensive specialist, but she's such an athlete that she can fill in at LS if necessary.

Last Spring Nebraska got a visit from Tianjin Bridgestone, one of China's top club teams. Our outside hitter, Hannah Werth, was struggling big-time (flu or something), so Cook pulled her and put Pendergast in. Despite being half a foot shorter than the Tianjin blockers, Megan recorded three kills (off seven swings), five digs and a block assist. She may be small, but she is still a big-time player.

Mostly I know Megan from her work with a youth club team here in Lincoln, where she was a part-time coach. She is GREAT with kids. My experience with Ms. Megan is that she is a good, high-character kind of person, a fine athlete, and she should be a great addition to the Aggies squad.

We are sorry to see her go. You folks take good care of her, OK?

rpr5121 - SEC is definitely a tougher road, especially as compared to a Nebraska-less Big 12.

I disagree AgBlastoff. The SEC is one of the worst major conferences in terms of volleyball. Floria is usually the best team in the league, and most years they are in the mix for a top 10 spot nationally. They won something like 10 or 12 conference championships in a row before finally losing one a few years back. LSU is generally the best team in the SEC west, and they are a team I would say are on par with A&M. In and out of the top 25 and don't generally do much in the tournament when they make it. We actually beat them on their home court in the NCAA's a few years ago.

Tennessee has some decent teams and a pretty good coach, but the biggest problem for most of the SEC is that the geographic areas where they are located and do most of their recruiting volleyball isn't nearly as big as it is here in the midwest and southwest. If we do end up joining the SEC it would probably help all the other teams volleyball recruiting having easier access to recruit Texas. Currently only LSU recruits heavily in Texas (especially in Houston) and Florida is the only program with enough clout to pull nationally in recruiting.

If you line up the Big 12's teams to the SEC teams,

Texas > Florida
Iowa State > Tenn.
Oklahoma > LSU
A&M > Kentucky
Missouri > Ole Miss
Baylor > Arkansas

The rest of the teams are all pretty bad. Kansas, Kansas State, and Texas Tech vs Georgia, South Carolina, Auburn, Alabama, Miss. State.

Overall the Big 12, even without Nebraska and Colorado, is a much stronger volleyball conference.

As far as our chances at the tourney, it should be interesting to see what happens. In the past the Big 12 has gotten anywhere from 4-6 teams into the NCAA each year. However we lost Nebraska, who was basically a guaranteed spot in the NCAA's each year, and Colorado who was usually finishing 9th or 10th out of 11 each year (OSU doesn't have a volleyball program). Now we are down to just nine teams. Texas and Iowa State are basically locks for the tournament. The next tier is Oklahoma, A&M, Missouri, and Baylor. All 4 of those schools have similar talent. Oklahoma has tended to finish better than their talent level each year, whereas A&M generally finished a bit below their talent level each year. Missouri has some good young players and Baylor has a lot of firepower but hasn't had any good passers the last few years. Tori Campbell is capable of being an all-American if Baylor has a good setter and some good passing. Kelsey Black can be an all-American if we can find a bit more balance in our offense. She has the firepower but she isn't quite at Laura Jones' level, who literally carried the entire team her senior year (and had the 2nd highest kills/set in the nation that year, behind some girl who played against much weaker competition).

I would say probably only two out of those four will make the NCAA's (Baylor, A&M, Missouri, and Oklahoma). I would expect OU to finish third, but the race for fourth is really up in the air in my mind. If Ringel has found some offense or if one of the other outsides is ready to take her spot than we should be able to claim 4th, but if Ringel hasn't improved greatly since last year and is still starting all year long we will be in trouble.

I agree with drumbeats assessment both of this season and SEC. Our team will be the same team athletically we had on the floor last year just more seasoned. Does more seasoning equate to a +6 minimum conference turnaround to make the NCAA's?? I dont see it, I see sweep against Tech and minimum split against Kansas K State and Baylor after that unsure. Expect 4 losses against Iowa State and Texas. The only games on our schedule that should provide some insight prior to conference is Creighton (twice) and Michigan. I would like to see more production / attempts from the right half of the court offensively this year (middles and RS) alievating Black for more attempts in a one on one blocker vs hitter attacking. We shall see in two more days how they will be coming off a spring season.

Also does anybody know why OH Mendenhall from Highland Park who signed with us last year didnt come to Texas A$M?

It will be interesting to see if the Corbelli's adjust from last season. They seem to be foused on the same starters and hope for different results.
