We exited the Big 12 at just the right time -- owning them on the way out the door before they righted the ship.

It will be interesting to see, from a distance now, how things develop with a new coach.

There were many rumors of turmoil in Austin following this year’s NCAA Championships and there were no recruits ranked within collegeswimming.com’s top 50 for the class of 2012.

Sounds like a lot of unhappy swimmers. From just watching the replay of Big 12s their kids looked ticked off.

The rumors have been floating around for a few days so I guess the Texas athletic department was forced to come out with something to address the situation. I have been watching the program for a couple years and have met Coach Brackin. I think she is a real competitor and represents her program well, certainly with regards to her recruiting effort. She has had some success but not near what you would expect based on the quality of her recent recruiting classes. Everything seemed to come to a head this season. I think in part it was due to the success of the A&M team. You can't help but track the progress of each team's recruits and come to the conclusion that the Longhorns just weren't getting it done. As was mentioned elsewhere it must be difficult for the Longhorn girls to watch other swimmers they have beaten their whole life suddenly overtake them at Big 12 and NCAA championship meets. Huge salaries come with high expectations. Winning dual meets in November just doesn't cut it.

Will the sips go after Tanica Jamison?

Not so sure about that Bogus, I think they will go after a high profile candidate. But we'll see. This is very interesting

Super thread title.

Brackin was un-keepable after a near mutiny occurred after Big12s. Eddie Reese was even asked to take over the team temporarily.

The Texas job is one of the most desirable jobs around. I think they will get many proven coaches interested in the job. I wonder if they will consider any men?!?

The super elite coaches like McKeever, Salo, Baurle, etc. probably aren't interested. It is that next tier of up and coming head coaches that might be the pool of candidates.

BTW - I don't think Brackins' pay was especially rich. I think mid-100s. Not crazy money like Goestenkors.

Looks like Coach Brackin won't be lining up for unemployment. She will be paid her base salary through August of 2014.

Can anyone imagine that Bultman has any interest? Jeez I hope not.

Wow.

I think Steve Bultman is sitting pretty right now. I would be surprised if he would be interested in a move anywhere much less to Texas.

Any chance Jim Henry gets bumped to Head Coach? Would he be considered part of the solution or part of the problem?

I would imagine Steve is pretty happy here. He built what we have going from scratch and is HIS program.

No offense intended but he's also not exactly the youngest coach on the pool deck these days either. Starting fresh in your early-to-mid-60's --even at Texas -- isn't something most folks do. I would bet Steve is happy with all he has going here and will be at A&M until he wishes to retire. We are all, without question, certainly happy to have him here leading us to the SEC.

I hear Jim Henry is respected in Austin. He swam for Texas which is probably a plus. But he doesn't seem splashy enough for Texas. I don't see how that says to the swimming world "we're serious about women's swimming here."

Bogus - BTW I heard that from a very good place. Eddie knows Brackin's rocky history via Hershey.

I think it is really hard to predict who will land where in swimming. Most athletic directors don't know much about swimming and will only go off of a resume. If a resume looks great they'll go for it just like the Texas administration did with Brackin. But at the same time the bigger the name the more likely they are to get hired, especially with someone like Eddie Reese surely advising them on who to hire.

Perhaps Brackins really wasn't the women's head coach at Auburn. Maybe she was realistically Marsh's assistant and not ready to stand alone.

I bet Texas hires someone already a head coach and not even close to being an assistant or co-head coach.

I find myself agreeing with the Dorsey Tierney option. She swam at Texas and has had success coaching elsewhere in multiple locations. She did a great job with ASU this past year, nearly sneaking them in the top 10. You have to remember their program was on life support a couple years ago...and she was coaching them men too. This job looks gift-wrapped for her.

Didn't she follow up Kim at Auburn?

Brackin's response was extremely politically correct and smart. Nothing really interesting. No way was she going to try to explain why her swimmers didn't perform after five years.

I gotta say, I didn't even think about Dorsey Tierney but IMO that would be a very smart hire...

Yeah, someone on the swimmingworld boards was talking about them trying to poach Steve (and getting him). Anyone who's spent more than 2 minutes on deck with the women's A & M team and staff would probably agree that Steve won't be going anywhere soon, never mind to tu....

favre - you're exactly right, most people hiring the head coaches know squat about swimming, something I brought up on the Big 12 board when it was running. Brackin is the prime example for that now I guess...
