That's a lot of 200/500 guys! I guess 1:39 aint what it used to be but it still seems like a solid group. I am happy to see this many faces coming in.

Looks like they weren't able to find a breaststroker this year but the other three medley legs might be good enough to make a strong B cut by the end of the season.

On the other hand, the free relays look like they're going to be absolutely stacked. Gregersen @ 50.8/1:51.7 and with a quick google search it looks like Muzek split a 50.3/1:50.4 at Croatian nationals on relays just a few weeks ago.

Combine that with the returning 4x1 and 4x2 guys and this is easily the deepest pool of freestyle talent the Aggies have ever had.

Good to have Omar back.

My wish list for the men:

- Troskot finally steps up and becomes the sprinter we thought he could be
- Simon Frank earns an A cut
- Two relays earn an A cut
- Four guys < 20 secs on the 50
- Someone becomes our 45 sec flyer
- Finish 4th in the SEC behind FL, GA, AU

- Troskot finally steps up and becomes the sprinter we thought he could be
-- This is just a vicious blame cycle. Troskot, gets blamed but has anybody wondered whether the training he's doing just isn't working?

- Simon Frank earns an A cut
-- he's got a better shot getting a solid B cut and hoping that he makes NCAAs that way.

- Two relays earn an A cut
-- The 800Free Relay, best chance. For any of the others, I'm doubtful.
The sprint freestylers aren't where they need to be. And they certainly weren't there last year either. (Coach Boyd isn't capitalizing on talent).
Without a decent backstroker like Ariens, or the two fastest in school history in their respective events (Fonua on the Breast and Loncaric on the fly), who both couldn't get an A cut done on relays last year ... You're asking a lot for the medley relays.

- Four guys < 20 secs on the 50
-- Dalton & Troskot have done it before. Only other person that looks like they can is Lindau.. I can't see anybody else on the roster capable of a sub-20

- Someone becomes our 45 sec flyer
-- Unlikely. Loncaric is too good to replace. Nobody on the roster looks good enough to fill his spot...at least not yet

- Finish 4th in the SEC behind FL, GA, AU
-- I won't comment on that one.

Looks like it's another rebuilding year for A&M...Is it ever NOT a rebuilding year though?

That post has a lot of butthurt in it.

Our current men's staff is a lot better, in my opinion, at getting peak perfomances out of its sprinters than the prior one. That was made crystal clear in year one of the regime. I'd go so far as to say the men's team overachieved in regards to getting NCAA qualifying marks at Big 12's last season. That was the first time in a while we weren't chasing down last chance meets. No we aren't where we'd like to be but we're a heck of a lot better than all but a small handful of schools. Losing Loncaric and Fonua will hurt a lot, particularly on the medley relays but it appears they did bring in a solid amount of talent in other areas.

I like the chances of our 400FR the best. Don't the new rules require a relay to have an individual qualifier now? Dalton will easily fill that role. Add in Wagner (43 already), KT (42+), PMS (51.1 LCM I think) and a freshman or two and there's good competition for the 4 spots. Getting a 4th shouldn't be hard from the freestyle stables.

4 guys under 20

Dalton, Lindau, Troskot, Wilson, *insert freshman or two here*. Someone else is bound to have a breakout swim in the 50. Even last year's backstroker broke 20. It's not an impossible task.

I have no idea how conference will go but the freshman must step up and raise the bar so that our one team will bring it home.

Anybody else see the irony here?? I personally think its the nutritionist's fault...but my second choice would have to be the Rec manager. Those guys just simply can't be expected to train at the highest level when the water is so dang cold!

Sign me up for the Boyd Bashing Blame Bandwagon too! The guy has gotten so many 5-star sprinter recruits to come to A&M during his tenure, and they just haven't come to fruition. Its sad really...

BigPapaB - I disagree that Boyd has gotten lots of 5 star sprinters to come to A&M. 5 star recruits are rare in the mens program.

But in almost every case our sprinters have done very well. I chalk that up to very good coaching and athlete development. I think the "new" thing in the mens team is the improvement in distance swimmers over the last few years. As a school with a sprint/relay reputation it has probably been difficult to get distance guys to come here. But Omar is an example of a great recruit that already owns most of the distance records.

I don't think any of my wish list is completely out of bounds. I realize some are clearly lofty. But damn - why not?

Despite what people think of swimmers' work ethic and whether the coaching is right or not, I know the Ags are bursting at the seams with talent this year.
They lost the Ariens/Fonua/Loncaric trio, and sure they'll be hard to replace. But, like Situation90 said, they've got guys there to fill the shoes (or should I say, FINZ? Chortle).
They've gotta step up, raise the bar, and make history...working as ONE TEAM Whoop!

Sarcasm Level = 3 millimoles approx (just for clarification)

Where does the blame go for under performance on a Div I Collegiate Swimming Team?
The swimmer (Troskot) who according to people here doesn't work hard? Or the coach (Boyd) who seems to get recruits that always fall short of the mark?

Are they better because they don't go to last chance meets to get their NCAA cuts? Yes.
Are they a top ten team? Not yet.
Yes we can do the whole "lets look at how far they've come" train of thought, but the truth is they haven't made top 10. If that is the goal, so far every year they have failed.

--Fact, not opinion.

I see 33 names on the roster (swim+dive). I don't remember it ever being that large before. Lot of names to split 9.9 scholarships with. And I guess that means Jay/Doug/Jay have AD $$ to maintain a roster that size.
5-Doubt

Or maybe that Jay and Doug are trying a new philosophy on team size?
SpicewoodAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?

It could be. But I know that in the past Jay was TOLD how big his roster could be by the athletic director.

5-Doubt
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I know that Jay has historically favored smaller teams, because he was a believer in the small, close group of guys just getting it done. A larger roster plus a limit on how many bodies he can take to SECs (A team only) means more competition for each spot. It could be just what this team needs.
AGBlastoff

I think 5-Doubt pointed out one of the more interesting stories for an Aggie swim fan this season. There were swimmers who were recruited in an era where everyone gets the Conference Championship meet at least (and for that matter, just about everyone ended up with at least one finals swim).

That's not an insignificant recruiting tool...probably not for guys who are going to be NCAA scorers, but maybe moreso for those mid-level recruits who could develop into great recruits.

Now we'll have a cap, and divers will factor into that cap as well. Verryyy interesting....

Also, what do you guys think about the 5-day SEC Championship schedule??

I understand why they're extending it, but I would not enjoy being on deck for 5 days trying to stay physically and mentally sharp.

Been away from these for a while now.

Who are all these swimmers recruited who have failed? Facts usually need stats to back them up.

Can we see a chart AggieFan?
