Aggies should be proud of the Aggie men's track team 11th place finish in Sacramento. Unless you count archery that is the best any Aggie team did this year on a national basis. Same thing with Tech and their 17th place finish. I realize it is not football and that Aggies only care about football but congratulations are in order for Ted Nelson and his team.

That is great, but let's not count it ahead of our baseball team, more like a tie. Their final ranking should be around 11th as well.

Our baseball team was not one of the top 16 teams in the country. The track team's performance was much more significant in my book.

For those that follow the sport and our program (trackboy, that would certainly include you), would someone please explain how the regional meet format works. Do you have to compete at the regional to make it to the finals, or is the regional just for those that used to be known as provisional qualifiers?

Was this a senior team that made its top showing and will retreat in the standings for the next couple of years, or was it a young team that has some prospect of improving that 11th place finish in the next couple of years.

Thanks in advance for the info. Congratulations to Coach Nelson and the team on a very good season.

A&M has always been one of the top two or three outdoor teams in the Big 12 and I think they are clearly on the rise. Losing someone like Pinnock is never a good thing, but then again he's only in one individual event and no relays.

Our forte in 2004 will again be the field events -- I think all 30 of those long jump points at the Big 12 meet are coming back, Gamble and Collins are back in the triple, Ralston is back in the platter, Ralston and Jimenez are back in the shot, Marrs, Matthews and Alfier are back in the jav, we lose only Walters among the six vaulters we qualified for NCAA regionals.

Texas and Nebraska aren't going away, but the Aggies have a few bullets in their gun too.

I think the team to watch out for is Tech. They are definitely on the rise. Texas will be better, too, with Jermaine Cooper back and Andre Manson and Donovan Kilmartin coming in. To his credit Ted Nelson has been very good at putting together teams with athletes in events where the conference is not that good (long jump this year) so prospects are very good for an improved Aggie team this year. I am a big track fan and it does my heart good for track to outdo football and the other sports on a national basis at three schools who live and die with football, A&M, Nebraska, and Tech.

Having a lockerroom for the first time since moving from Kyle Field in the mid 1980s ought to help too...
