I wonder how many full-ride soccer scholarships are available to women as opposed to men, on a nationwide basis?

Anybody have an idea of the ratio?

I'm pretty sure that (at least at A&M), they have no problem handing out the dough. They need women on $ for the title 9 stuff. Not saying that they all are on a full. I know the NCAA puts a limit on how many scholarships a school can give in each sport. I know track has 12.7 or 12.9 total scholarships to give out amongst the entire mens team. Usually women get more scholarships per sport b/c there are fewer sports or posistions, and they # for men and women has to equal out.

Title 9 ruined men's soccer. Some like N.Texas cancelled men's and added Women's. No school that i know of has added men's soccer but a lot have added Women's soccer. That is a fact of life. Of course, I'm for both!

The only school in Texas that I even know of w/ Men's Soccer is SMU... But I don't know how many scholarships, sorry.

Yeah, Jim. I had a buddy on scholarship at NTSU (at the time) when they shut down their very competitive men's program. TCU folded their Men's team last year, which was a shame. I know there are plenty of small schools on both coasts that have quality men's soccer programs with scholarships. I also know that women's soccer has more. I was just wondering if anybody else had an idea of roughly how many more.

Great sport, relatively cheap to maintain a program. It's too bad about title 9.

i am pretty sure soccer has 12 scholarships, which are spread throughout as many members of the team as the coach prefers

I'm really afraid this is going to turn into a title 9 thread, which I don't want to happen. But I can't help saying that title 9 is GOOD for sports. Why? B/c is helps make sure that women are not left behind. They deserve the same as the men. Title 9 is not the problem, it's the bottom line that hinders programs. More money = more sports, facilities, etc.

Wow! You must be really afraid since you posted it three times!

Actually, I'm hoping that Bill Byrne, if we get enough money, can add some sports. I'd love to see Men's Soccer & Wrestling, added w/ Women's Lacrosse & Gymnastics. I don't know how possible it is though.

Yeah, sorry about the 3 posts thing.

About adding new sports, it's not gonna happen. I had spoken with Wally Groff about that before. He said that there is no way another mens sport would be added. Maybe another womens. If there would even be a mens sport added he said that it would probably be wrestling. But with Bill Byrne in there, who knows. I think he is more concerned with football, anyway. I don't think he is too big on the other non-revenue sports.

I spoke with Lynn Hickey when she was assistant AD. She said she'd love to add men's soccer, but would have to add three more women's sports to balance it. And since we're already doing Equistrian, Archery and several other minor sports, it just isn't going to happen under the present system. There aren't enough women's intercollegiate sports to make up the difference.

And as I understand it, it is a numbers game, not a $$$ game. If your school is 50% female, 50% of the scholarships have to go to women.

In the meantime, there is an excellent Texas A&M men's soccer club under the Department of Recreational Sports. Too bad we can't bump them up to Intercollegiate Sports.

And there are plenty of men's soccer teams, ust at smaller schools (like WTAMU here in Canyon) .

Actually, it's a numbers game, and a money game. In the end, it would not be financially sound to add more sports. Archery and Equestrian was added to balance out the numbers, from what I understand. Adding another men's team means spending more money, on men and women. Just not gonna happen until we decide we don't want to spend money on football anymore.

..and of course any AD would "love" to have more sports added. wouldn't you? but it all comes back to the bottom line, money.

Yeah, I understand about all the money, it's too bad...

Canyon - I haven't seen the men's soccer club but I hear the women's lacrosse club is also really good. I wish we could see those sports but I'm afraid it won't happen.
