my 7th grader is going out for track this week, and asked me what I thought about the triple jump? I realized I don't know anything about it, and thought it seemed like sort of an odd event. Thoughts? I mean, name the last famous "Triple Jumper" from the Olympics.

I also told him I wish they ran the 60 like they do in College.

Very odd event but combines three skills used a lot in Track training. Was once called the Hop, Step and jump. The Single leg Hop, and step (otherwise known as a bound) are the core of any plyometrical training program whilst jumping is obviously a core skill in the sport of Track and Field.

It is a really, really demanding event. A lot of pressure through the body at each stage. Bringing junior talent up in the event is really hard. We had an athlete on our High School team who just graduated last year here in Australia. Offers from all over America. He has still yet to use his full long jump run up for the Triple, as it would put his body through strain it probably is not strong enough to cope with yet. You have to sacrifice a little in the way of performance in your juniors to maintain long term prospects. Super technical.

Name the last famous, Discus thrower, shot putter, High jumper etc. You just don't remember many names of Track stars period anymore.

Triple jump is a hard event. Have him learn to sprint and long jump first.

Great point.. have him learn the right fundamentals with sprinting and long jumping first.
This is very very important. Body control is everything.

Agree with comments here. I don't know that I care to see triple jump at the junior high level but it is a wonderful event. It is one of the supreme power/speed events in sports. The strength and coordination to properly execute all three phases is really beyond an athlete at that age. Bounding exercises on grass executing good technique is a good way to start. As a reference what the best of the finished product would look like I offer this.

Ed, those jumps... i could watch them on repeat for a while. They are a thing of beauty.

To the OP, make sure your son has fun doing the TJ. Most 7th graders can't even make it down the runway correctly, much less triple jump. There will be moments where he may feel completely unable to do it correctly, and possibly embarrassed by it. Keep it fun.

i agree with cdonlee, when you first start is is really frustrating.. there are days when you cant get anything right, but if you learn how to do it correctly it will help everything. your lj will improve bc of body control, and you get more sprint practice then everyone. i loved doing it and went to state all 4 yrs in HS for it.

Going to state once is a tremendous accomplishment. Four times has to be exceedingly rare.

My 10th grade son is a Triple Jumper. He started in 7th grade and learned by watching youtube videos. WE found him a coach during his freshman year. Start working in phases. Get the first phase (hop) down first. Have him work on using his arms to generate upward lift to generate more distance in phase two and three.
