Was never really a fan of racing but have grown to appreciate it after working in advertising for a large brand that has major motor sports sponsorships in NASCAR and Formula 1. After visiting SHR's garage and seeing how hard everyone trains, I'd say its definitely a sport and the drivers/crews are definitely athletes (I actually think Boone Stutz is on one of the SHR crews).

Strangely enough though...I have still never been to a race.

1) It's absolutely a sport

2) I already liked NASCAR enough before, but my first race really opened the door to how awesome it truly is in person. Been going every year for probably 9 years now, and plan to go to a lot more and see as many tracks as possible over the next 10 years.

Before my first race in person, I casually followed it, watched the big races, etc.

After my first race, we start making it a full weekend every year(sometimes twice when A&M plays road games in November on that weekend). It's the only sporting event where the entire weekend can rival a weekend of Aggie Football at Kyle Field. It's important to embrace the culture, check your pretentiousness, ego, and pride at the gate, and have a great time with good friends.

1. I view it as a sport more so than say.....bowling.

2. Went to Texas the year Dale Sr. died. I took my brother who was a huge fan at the time. I will say that going to the track and watching it live is absolutely awesome. It made a casual fan out of me that day and I follow it moderately EXCEPT for the big tracks: Daytona, Dega, Texas, ect...

Road courses blow.

Auto racing is a sport.

I heard this several years ago and I think it's held up well. It doesn't perfectly define a sport but excludes certain things...

Any competition where the outcome is subjective is not a sport.

Throwing a 15 or 16 pound ball upwards of 20 mph with 300 to 450 rpm with accuracy is not a sport?

The modern bowling delivery is remarkably similar to virtually every major sport played with a ball. Core rotation, leg drive as well as flexion and extension of wrist muscles within milliseconds. Not to mention the fact that only a shot put approaches the weight of a bowling ball.

I had a conversation a couple of weeks ago with former MLB pitcher John Burkett about all the similarities between pitching and bowling. I seriously doubt you would win an argument with him about whether bowling is a sport. John bowled quite a bit as a kid and just turned 50. He rolls the ball quite well and is going to take a shot a the PBA50 Tour this year. I am interested in seeing how he does.

Yes it is a sport, like other motor sports. But it is not a good one. It is an illusion that the cars are Chevy of Ford or Dodge or Toyota. I don't care if the racing is close and competitive. Racing on ovals without shifting of any kind or turning is unappealing.
