I was in Austin for the NCAA's and it was awesome.

But, where were the Fightin Texas Aggies?

We had only a handful of folks qualify and they were all field events, with the exception of Melissa Gulli.

That's just flat-out UNACCEPTABLE.

I hope Bill Byrne realizes this...

actually, Texas A&M was represented by 13 athletes at the NCAA Outdoor meet, which was second-most in the Big 12 (Texas had 15 qualifiers).

And the women's team placed 13th in the team race, which is their highest team finish in school history.

But 38th place by the men was downright embarrassing...

but 38th place finish was on the heels of an 11th place finish in 2003. And many of those 2003 point-scorers were back, but didn't do as well in 2004.

Something does seem wrong. Ags Outdoor NCAA finishes the last 5 years Charlie Thomas was head coach were 6,6,4,2, and 11th. Ted Nelson took over in '91 and finished 11th again. From then on...!
'92 50th followed by 34,48,28,19,16,19,56,16,10,39 and 11........what happened?

Bill Byrne agrees. Coach Nelson is gone as is Coach Nash.

Sometimes I wonder what $ Bill is thinking. I think firing Nelson and Nash is a mistake, but thats just me.

Nash took the one of the best facilities in the nation and produced nothing but average results. We can find a better coach and compete with tu.

Nelson was ready to retire. Besides our NCAA results don't compare with others in this region...Baylor, LSU, tu, TCU etc.

Don't be surprised to see one of the two programs completely CUT. With the loss of archery, A&M is in jeopardy of not meeting Title IX requirements....plus, Bill Bryne CUT the men's swimming program at Nebraska, so history is there. Track will stay, but don't be surprised if Bill kills men's swimming and diving for Title IX and budget reasons.

I don't see our swimming and diving being cut before track and field. We have been a lot more successful in swimming lately, than we have in track

Byrne originally fired all the S&D coaches at Nebraska because they were all cheating. I certainly hope he doesn't cut the program here though, it's getting better & better. I hope he does (what I believe is) the right thing and hires himself a big name.

BJS, you have misinformation on one topic, and not enough information on the other.
Bill disbanded the NU swimming program and fired the coachings staff because they broke NCAA rules in recruiting the team. He saved the University from NCAA repercussions and embarrassment.

We are fully in compliance with Title IX, even if archery goes away. Equestrian provides the needed balance to football and we require no changes in our programs.

There's NO way with our facilities that we will cut either Swimming program, regardless of results. I do question the termination of the men's coach, however. There's only 4 men's programs in Texas colleges, and t.u. is clearly the one that top swimmers in the state, to the extent they stay here, want to be. SMU also has a competitive program, as does A&M.

What exactly does Byrne think a new coach will do? If he's convinced we can bring someone in here to make top 15 top 3, then great. But can that be done given the state of, well, the state?
