Not exactly ground-breaking news but it has finally become official.
I have so many questions about this team that I don't know where to begin. Potentially this team could take MLS to a whole new level, but it could also ruin many things that MLS is trying to accomplish.
I love the fact that they are playing in LA, not that there was ever a chance they wouldn't. MLS has its first true rivalry and its in the city with the best facility. However, I'll be anxious to see how Galaxy fans react to the new team. Will the Mexican-American fans that are currently Galaxy fans, start to support the new team simply because they are owned by Vergara and will have predominantly Hispanic players? I hope not but if they do, I wonder just how many fans they will have left.
In regards to players that the new team will field, the MLS has repeatedly insisted that Vergara adhere to league rules regarding players meaning that he will be allowed no more than three international allotments. Vergara has suggested that he would circumvent this rule by employing only Americans of Mexican descent. (Is that even legal? I mean if I were a kid who barely missed out on a contract with MLS, I would contact a lawyer to see my options) Whether he breaks the rules or bends it, this has the potential to really hurt MLS. Some things I've considered:
1) Vergara bothers me to no end. He strikes me as a person who is only looking to line his pockets and has absolutely no interest in strengthening the game here in the US, which is a stark contrast to every other owner in the league. I can envision Vergara using the team as a farm team of sorts for his mighty Chivas in Mexico which only devalues the league and its reputation even if it could provide the league with a little cash since technically the league as a whole owns a player's rights and not an individual team.
2) While MLS actively searches for ways to incorporate America's immigrant population, pissing off soccer moms and dads is not the way to do it. That is exactly what will happen if the new team is given preferential treatment or is allowed to circumvent the rules. If MLS is ever going to expand to a level to that of say hockey (which I think it could do), it must appeal to more than just America's immigrant population. Granted this isn't a concern for the near future but a concern (of mine) nonetheless.
3) Can a team have more than one home field? This new franchise may do just that. When Chivas USA plays the Burn in Dallas, or maybe even the Metrostars and Fire, I wouldn't be surprised if there are more people there to cheer for the away team. Sure that increased attendance means increased revenue for those teams but at what cost? It may simply do more harm to the game and surely provide more ammunition for people who bash soccer here in the US.
Time will tell what exactly will happen. Maybe I'm worried for no reason.
