Meet Preview
What a meet it was last weekend. The Aggies traveled up to Lubbock and showed out with some amazing performances. This weekend the Aggies will be home hosting the Ted Nelson Invitational and it's time to turn it up another notch!
We'll get to see some more season debuts for a couple Ags and some others race their primary events. Ja'Qualon Scott will be racing the 60 Hurdles, we'll add a few more guys in the 400 including Antonie Nortje and Kimar Farquharson, Camryn Dickson and Anya Jackson will run the 200, Blake Harris will make his debut in a few events, we'll have Peter Narumbe and Reece Sharman-Newell running the 800, and we'll have a lot of distance runners in action in the mile and 3000.
I expect great things after what we got accomplished at Tech. Like I mentioned last week, indoors is different than outdoors in that they track the top marks one every event and the top 16 marks qualify to the national meet. There are no separate qualifiers or advancement meets. So each meet we can see big marks that have huge impacts. Maybe after this meet I'll update us all and post who has a top 16 mark and who's on the bubble.
Last week we saw multiple huge performances and 3 school records go down (all from newcomers). Freshman, Lily Carlson broke the pole vault record with a clearance of 14'5.50. An absolutely insane performance for the freshman. Grad transfer Henry Zimmerman broke the school record in the weight throw on his first attempt in maroon and ended with a 71'9. Peter Narumbe, a freshman from Kenya broke the school record by 2 seconds in the 1000 with a 2:19. We also saw some huge times that could be top 16 times or close. Our 4x400's ran 3:04 and 3:31 both amazing times for middle January. Jaiya Covington, the reigning national champ in the 60 hurdles ran a huge 8.08. We had two great performances in the women long jump with Sofia Yakushina going 20'11 and Morgan Davis going 20'9.
This weekend provides a great opportunity to improve on our season marks and see where we stand amongst the best in the country. I love indoor track and field due to every performance having the opportunity of being important. More importantly it's one more "rehearsal" as Pat Henry likes to call them before the post season meets arrive. We get two home practice meets before having conference at home. We're home this weekend, then we're headed to Boston, then back home, then New Mexico, then conference. Every meet presents a huge opportunity.
Friday will only be the weight throw then everything else kicks off Saturday with field events beginning at 11, then running events at 12! If you're in town be there! You can watch some track then head on over to Reed! Make it a fun weekend! Let's hope for some fast times, far throws, and big jumps!!
