Distance Distance Distance! It's all about distance squad this weekend as they make the trek up to Massachusetts to compete at Boston University. Pros and many of the top distance runners in the NCAA will meet here at the distance friendly track which sees a lot of PR's and fast times.
Last season our distance squad travelled to Boston and came away with some huge performances. Cooper Cawthra destroyed his own Aggie School Record with a 3:54 mile. Diego Heredia and Luca Santorum ran 4:02 miles. Jack Johnston and Jonathan Chung ran pb's in the 5000. Debora Cherono ran a huge 4:38 mile breaking the school record, Elise Smoot ran a 4:47. Meanwhile Megan Roberts and Kennady Fontenot ran huge pb's in the 5000 as well.
This season the Aggies head to Boston with new faces including one set to make their Aggie track debut, Michael Kiplagat Moiben who is set to make his NCAA and Aggie debut in the 5000. The talented runner from Kenya enrolled in January and I can't wait to see what he does for us. Joyce Kemboi, the UTEP transfer who SHINED for us in cross country will be competing in the elite 5000 along with Megan Roberts. Jack Johnston will join Moiben in the 5k as well.
Unfortunately Luca Santorum's name has been scratched from the start list, but we'll still have Youssef Asslouj set to the run his first mile in the maroon and white. Joining him in that mile race will be Diego Heredia, Ondrej Gajdos, and Carter Gordy. The women's mile will include Aggie record holder Debora Cherono, talented senior Elise Smoot, and super star freshman Sophia Bendet. Emma Little will race the 3000 on her own.
The competition in this meet will be insane. The meet is seeded based on Pr's and will have elite divisions and an open division. The first heats will be the fastest and so on. Cherono will be in the elite division in the mile, in the second heat. Smoot and Bendet will be in the first and second heat of the open mile. Roberts and Kemboi will be in the elite 5000. Asslouj will be in the first heat of the open mile. Johnston and Moiben will be in the first heat of the 5k as well. There will be countless professional runners from many different countries, as well as some of the top collegians. Schools like Stanford, Colorado, BYU, New Mexico, Tennessee, and Iowa State will be competing. The competition will be great!
Last year while our distance squad headed to Boston, the rest of the Aggies competed in New Mexico. This year it'll be an off week for sour sprinters and field eventers. It'll be a good week to get healthy and get stronger before a busy month of February which is sure to bring big performances!
This weekend all eyes will be on our fantastic distance crew. We have a strong group led by coaches McRaven and Abell. I expect some huge times, and some school records to be broken. Stay tuned this weekend and I'll keep you updated!! Our distance squad will deliver!
