Outdoor season is upon us. Where track and field belongs! Indoor may not have ended the way we hoped, but we all know Coach Henry builds his teams for the outdoor season!
First some housekeeping! Amazing news is that Ja'Qualon Scott and Kimar Farquharson are listed on the outdoor roster. There was some concerns on whether they'd have outdoor eligibilty. Having both will be huge for us, especially Scott who's an excellent hurdler in the 110/400 hurdles. David Foster, a sprinter transfer from Cal is ready to go after not having indoor eligibility. He will be our fastest sprinter. A great triple jumper Daniel Falode, from Harvard is in the same boat and will be competing this weekend for us. Auhmad Robinson is not listed on the outdoor roster.
On the women's side, some devastating news is that Winny Bii is not on the outdoor roster either. A huge blow to the team. On the bright side, the Aggies will be gaining Jasmine Montgomery and Adriana Tatum back outdoors as they didn't have indoor eligibility. Both are potential point scorers at nationals and will be a huge boost to our relays.
We won't see our indoor national qualifiers competing this weekend, but many Aggies will be competing. It will also be a solid meet with the Arkansas women and tu. We'll still see some great marks and performances from our group. The meet is split into two days although day 1 is mainly just half the field events and the 5000 (which no Ags will run).
Day 1 will feature the hammer throw, shot put, javelin, and long jump. We'll have to wait to see the Aggie debut of Prosper Chinecherem, an Olympic level javelin thrower transfer. Although we get the returns of Sam Hankins and Katelyn Fairchild, two all Americans who missed all of last season for the Ags. We'll get the hammer debut of transfer Jayla Hooper and listed in the long jump are Kyhbah Dawson and Jedidiah Udunna who didn't compete at indoor conference.
Saturday will be an interesting day with a lot of runners running events they don't usually do. Ja'Qualon Scott is entered in the 200 although I don't believe he will run. Our 800 guys will be running 400's. Listed to run is Jasiah Rivera, a star freshman who didn't run all fall. I thought he was out for the season with a leg injury but looks like he's good to go! We won't have a men's 4x100, but we'll have two women's 4x100's running. Last year our women ran extremely well here in this event. Kennady Fontenot and Emma Little are entered in the 1500 after having their cross country seasons cut short. Jasmine Montgomery is entered in the 100 and Adriana Tatum in the 200. That 200 is going to be loaded. I'm also really excited to see Sophia Bendet in the 800. Most of our distance crew won't be competing aside from a few in the 1500.
It's only meet 1, but being back outdoors has to be exciting. Indoor left a nasty taste in my mouth and I can't wait for the Ags to redeem themselves. Outdoor is a little different compared to indoors. Here instead of top 16 nationally, we have to be ranked top 48 in the west region. The ncaa is split into an East and West side and the top 48 compete at a regional meet where the top 12 there advance to a national finals meet. So just like indoors, I'll be tracking rankings and seeing where we stand! Let's get after it this weekend and set the tone for a great outdoor season.
