The whole Section/Title or whatever 9 of the NCAA rules in regards to male and female sports? I was under the impression you had to have the same number of sports for both genders? Or is it simply you can't have more male than female? I'm just asking, since we have 8 male ans 11 female sports listed on AggieAthletics.com

Thanks!

It has something to do with, for every number of mens scholarships, there has to be a certain about of female. Something like that.

Title IX is all about the amount of scholarships that male and female are provided for by the institution. It doesnt matter how many actual sports you have, its just about the amount of scholarships given to male and female athletes.

Actually I think it says, that as long as you are making progress (as determined by the NCAA) towards equality of scholarships you are fine. I do know that A&M is near the top for Title IX compliance.

I say we get rid of men's swimming/diving and bring soccer to the Big XII. I bet they'd bring out a lot more spectators, who watching swimming/diving anyway?

The problem w/ bringing in Men's soccer would be finding opponents. Nobody around here has a NCAA men's soccer team. The closest one that I can think of would be SMU. But nobody in the Big12 has one, I don't think.

texasaggie04 is correct. SMU is the only D1 school in the state with a men's soccer team, according to the latest list i've seen online. we'd have to travel a long ways for each away game.

i understand that soccer hasn't been popular long enough to develop enough programs in the area...but now there is a ton of talent in the Houston-Austin-Dallas triangle. some really good mens soccer programs could arise if it was possible.

the A&M men's club team has won a couple national championships in the past few years though.

SO because the football team has so many players, that's why we have so few men's sports compared to womens? That makes sense.

Well take away basketball, baseball/softball, tennis, swimming & diving, golf and track. I know the girls have archery, volleyball, equestrian, and soccer, how many scholly's do those teams get? Football has 85 I believe, I dont see that many scholarships available for the girls. Of course I dont know how many are on the equestrian team so that could make up the difference.

It is also based on the gender population of the school.

I'm not completely sure, but I think title IX also has a criteria on roster spots and/or total expenditure. Sports all have a limit on their walk-on roster spots and I thought it was tied to cost/title IX more than competition, etc., but I could be wrong.

As far as replacing swimming with soccer, that could be a sticky situation, but not out of reason. I know that swimming is a sport that costs a lot and doesn't bring in revenue. Soccer on the other hand would at least lose less money. Byrnes has a history of cutting men's swimming at his previous schools even when they were competitive programs, so I'm sure he's thought about it here, too.

I think the 2 things keeping it at A&M are
1) I can't imagine that the athletic department is hurting for money, so that isn't a high priority, and
2) The state of Texas is one of, if not the best talent pools for swimming in the country. That would be like a north eastern school dropping lacross or a northern school dropping hockey. Because of this talent near by A&M will always have a competitive swim team, and with a little recruiting luck we might break through to an elite program.

a)the equestrian team is huge

b)byrne, not byrnes

c)we won't be droppin swimming any time soon because we just got some good, new coaches, and it would take a LONG time to establish ourselves as a soccer power, even with our reputation as a good athletic program and the sizable pool of good players in texas

Title IX means that the number female athletes at your school should be the same percentage of females attending the school -- scholarships have nothing to do with it...even though the equestrian team has like 70 people on it, they only get between 10-15 scholarships vs. football who has in the neighborhood of 120 players with 85 scholarships

>>Section/Title or whatever 9 of the NCAA rules<<

Title 9 is federal law, not an NCAA rule.

The original statute is fairly short. Its the regulations that were put in place originally by the Carter administration (Justice department, I think) and eventually adopted by the courts in case rulings that have caused havoc.
