A real tragedy he had to share Big 12 Freshman of the Year. He had an unbelievable year, and should have won unanimously. Th highest ranked freshman in the country (#12 in the country I think), played at the #1 spot in his freshman yr. beating the nation's #1, and he has to share the award with a guy playing in the #3 or #4 spot for Baylor. I don't question the guy's talent, but for those of us that watch college tennis, it is a huge step up from the #3 or #4 spot to the #1 spot. This was a travesty.
In looking forward to this weekend's tourney, who does others see as a challenge to baylor (besides us and I don't think we have the horses to win it all)? I think Pepperdine could be a sleeper, they trashed us and had a great season. Illinois, Virginia, Ole Miss?

Plus he was an american. Oh well Baylor's Nazi tennis regime rolls on.

UVA and Old Miss are the only teams with the fire power to challenge waco. I mean how many teams can boast a davis cup member playing at 5 singles? They are loaded!!!!!

Come on Aggie11, show some class. Yeah, the foreign trend in tennis sucks, but to call them that does not represent our school well.

Btw, I think Jerry should have won Fish of the year for sure, but that being said, he also would play #3 if he were at Baylor. Dorsch and Becker are two of the best college tennis players in the nation.

and jerry just happens to have scoreboard on bene right now. and had he played becker that night instead, he would have owned him too.

i'm not saying that jerry should be ranked ahead of them, because they are seniors and jerry has plenty of time to keep climbing the rankings. but jerry is playing VERY good tennis right now, and IMO, his singles match against dorsch will be the best match in the first round of the team tournament.

**welcome back rocket...i knew you couldn't stay away**

tryon, your point that Jerry would play #3 with Baylor does not reflect at all on his season but on baylor's depth. Bottom line is he did play #1, beat a lot of very seasoned players, including Dorsch, and was head and shoulders above any other Big 12 or national frshman. I have seen a lot of very good college players that were very good #3s but would not be good #1's. It takes a truly special player to step right in and have the kind of season Jerry had.
BTW, I think those of you going this weekend should watch Pepperdine, they have a dangerous team that knows how to win.

Oh, I totally agree. I was refering to Baylor's depth and not to Jerry's ability at all. He is obviously great, and as I said he should have won FOY for sure. I was just pointing out that the Baylor guy being #3 was due to the depth and not just ability.

I hope Jerry can take another from Dorsch tommorow, but I have seen Dorsch enough to know that will be a very, very tough challenge.

Agree, should be worth the price of admission to see that matchup. Dorsch will be hungry for revenge, but if Jerry can get up early on him, watch out.

last night i thought jerry played really well vs. dorsch. despite a couple of very easy easy missed overheads, he had solid groundstrokes and hung in there. i was very impressed. and he's only a freshman!

also saw him at northgate that night. very nice guy. went up to him and said nice match. he thanked me for coming out and said "i wish i could have played better for yall." really humble

Before the season started, I got a chance to play with the team in a "pro-am" type doubles set up at pebble creek. Ante was on the court i played on and Jerry was on the court next to me. He by far has the best strokes i have ever seen in person. he was a bit quite, but he was an 18 year old, being stuck with some 40-somethings, trying to beat him. After he was done with his match, he stayed and hit for about 30 minutes with those scrubs. VERY VERY VERY class move!

Ante was hilarious, and easy to get along with, but not into it as much. Jerry was playing the way he plays.

I hope he wipes the court with the Baylor player in the next round!

I heard from a source close to Jerry that he plans to transfer from A&M to another university.

i heard from him 2 days ago that he expects to have a lot of tough matches and a big rivalry with lars, baylor's fish star from this year, for years to come.

i specifically asked him about his possible transfer and he said he was staying. said something to the effect of "not having a good year" (outside of tennis) but he got things figured out. so unless he changes his mind, he's coming back

it was just a case of a guy who had been out of school for a long time (graduated from high school way early) having to leave everything he knew, and figuring out how to balance big time college tennis with a big time college education.

he's gotten his feet wet and it's only gonna get easier for him to adjust from here on in.
