Great shot right off the goalie's fingertips.

And for future reference - it's injury time.

It was a great move to get into scoring position but he did get a little help with the deflection. He doesn't get knocked off the ball nearly as easily as he used to.

i've always liked how the MLS provides video highlights online. lots of stuff to see in the Sights & Sounds section each week.

hit the nail on the head.

when he first came into the league, his footwork, and presence was great. But he'd get knocked of the ball way to easy....and it's not like he's small compared to most of the guys.
Nowadays he's positioned MUCH better, and can fend off defenders.....which is what he did to get that shot.

c'mon guys, he's 5-8, 145lbs. That is really small compared to most of the other guys around him. Look at them when they line up for a free kick and you'll see the difference. But he has become a force to be reckoned with in the midfield after the failed youth championship finals this summer and by the time he is fully grown we could have ourselves a true international star.

It's all about leverage, timing, and confidence, Riley. I'm 5'9". I usually played center back or sweeper and could knock anyone off the ball in a league where we had a large number of 6-foot plus forwards.

Some guys are finesse players and some are very physical. Adu's not the most physical guy, but as he gains experience and confidence he will be able to hold is ground better. He's already improved a lot. He'll be ready for the full men's side soon.

How well do you think he'd do now on the national team if he got a start? How soon do you see him making the team?

If we stick to this 3-4-3 system we've been running lately I could see Adu playing as one of the forwards. He wouldn't have any defensive responsibilities, which would be great because at this time he couldn't handle them at the international level, and his focus would be on what he does best, attacking. I don't see him starting if we had all of our options available(I envision a Beasley - McBride - Eddie Johnson starting lineup), but if McBride were to get injured or as he tired late in the game it would be great to have an attacking player like Freddy to come on for him and move EJ to the middle and let Freddy play on the right. That would be a sick forward lineup with tons of speed and skill. I think the only thing hurting him is that we probably won't stick with the 3-4-3 in every game at the World Cup and Freddy doesn't have the versatility of other players to move into midfield or play up top with only one other player allowing defenses to focus on him more. I guess if Arena is sold on this 3-4-3 system I could definitely see Freddy start to get minutes very soon.

I agree, Arena won't use the 3-4-3 enough to make it worth it. In fact, I think he used the Gold Cup to experiment with the 3-4-3 but the I think the 4-4-2 is still his standard. The US will line up in a 4-4-2 against T&T in three weeks. As far as Adu goes, unless he starts turning in consistently good performances for United he won't even get called into a camp before Germany. He'd have to do something amazing in MLS and then he might get called into a camp for some friendlies after qualifying (if we qualify) but before the World Cup. He'll be there in 2010 (if we qualify) but it will take a miracle to get him there in 2006.

Watched Freddie at the U-20 World cup in Holland. He's not ready for the Nat'l team. Holds the ball to long, and gives it away too often. Looks like a youngster who has read his press clippings.

Or..maybe he hasn't adjusted to the speed of play at the international level, and that was a good chance for him to see where he needs to progress.

I heard Adu played very well last night against the highest caliber team he's faced. I'm going to watch the game today, so I'll give you my synopsis after that.

I just got through watching the game and Freddy played well, as did most of his teammates. The one major difference b/w Freddy and his teammates is skill level. Freddy looks like he wouldn't be out of his league(skill-wise) if he were inserted into an EPL lineup. His teammates(although most played a good game) looked like most of their success came from their hustle. I guess nothing really moved me too much about this game it just solidified the fact that when Adu learns to play at his highest level consistently he will be a force to be reckoned with.
