My old school Diamondback V-link is 1996 model and seems pretty heavy. I am thinking a getting a new bike with 2 candidates so far.

1. Rocky Mountain Element 30 or 50.
2. Diamondback XLS Comp or XLS Elite.

I live in San Antonio so a full suspension is premo over grapefruit sized rocks.
I don't care for the Cannondale or Marin dealer in town. Any input is welcome. Thanks.

I've had good experience with Kona in the past with a hardtail XC bike. Almost bought a Kona Dawg awhile back. I'm more of a roadie than mountain biker, but I've heard very good things about them from others.

Bicycle Heaven up on Heubner carries them, and they have a pretty decent selection of other stuff too.

Good luck choosing.

Ive got a 3 yr old Rocky Mountain Stratos (hardtail). I think the element is the same setup but suspended. Sweeeeeet rides - AND - no one else will have one and thats kinda cool... seems like er'body's got a Gary Fisher or a Specialized.

don't get a diamondback. Get a Rocky Mountain, Kona, Santa Cruz, Intense, anything. Just don't get a Diamondback.

I've thought about getting one on and off for a couple of years. I almost bought a Marin last year. What about Trek? Isn't more about the components though and not the bike brand?

I like that Marin's, but the dealer in SA sucks. You pose some good questions. Thank you.

Cdonlee:

The D-back I have had since 1996. It has lasted longer than everyone's Trek I know. Granted it is not a "sexy" brand. I am starting to think Gary Fisher.

After riding many bikes on Saturday...the Specialized Epic is the winner. Wow! What a ride!

I think if I were to buy another bike, it would be a Specialized. They have the right sizing for me, good geometry, and are a good company. I sold my Giant XTC last year as I didn't ride it much and never really liked the feel of the bike compared to a GT I bought in '99. Since GT is essentially no more, I think Spec. is the way to go, and if I decide to get back into biking, that's probably what I'll get.

Incidentally, Giant makes most of the frames made today.
