I had some people do a little research and found this.

According to NCAA 2004 stats (found at ncaa.com), these are the only D1 soccer programs that averaged more than 2000 fans per home game in 2004.

Men
Indiana (2,385) New Mexico (2,378) Conn (2,2009) Md (2,046) and UC-SB (2,008)

Women
Texas A&M (2,700) NC (2,422) and Portland (2,101)

Wow, I didn't realize we had the top attendance average in all of D1 soccer, very impressive. I wonder if this many would show up if we had a top men's team.

More should show up. If we had a men's team, it would not be long before it was the best. Texas has the most talent(the state)

Can we drop swimming/diving and pick up soccer? I don't know how many people show up for swim meets, but if we averaged a decent amount of people for a men's team I'm sure it would be more profitable. I'm sure we could as I agree we'd have a very good team very quickly with all the talent around the state.

I just took a quick look at the top 10 teams in the country and in those top 10 teams there are 20 Texans including the 2005 High School Player of the Year. Think about all the displaced Texans in the rest of the 15 teams plus all of the guys that play in lower divisions here in Texas, b/c they didn't want to go too far from home. There's no doubt in my mind we could be top 10 year in year out like the women's team.

Unfortunately, it'll never happen. The lack of D1 men's teams in the area means travel costs would be through the roof. It's just not feasible.

Ag 83 hit it. The only competition anywhere near us is SMU. It'd cost too much and we'd have to pick up another women's sport to balance it out. There's no way we're dropping swimming/diving with our facilities. We've hosted the NCAA Championships more than once, that program isn't going anywhere.

yeah, SMU is the only mens D1 team in the state...at least that's the way it was last year and i don't think that's changed. the only way we'd be able to do it is if several other schools did it at the same time...and that wouldn't be easy.

The shame of it is that we could dominate the national scene. If we started D-1 men's soccer, we would have the early jump on tu, lsu, everybody in region. I imagine some other schools would follow suit after a few years. But that 3-4 year headstart would be worth the extra cost initially.

We'ld have to leave the extra seats from the NCAA championships in. Imagine 10K to watch a soccer match in a country that "doesnt care about soccer". Wouldnt be the 80K at Kyle for football or the 100K that soccer countrys get, but It would be cool.

So I hear they split the funds between Men and Women's sports equally, so to offset the funds that go to football we have equestrian, soccer, and volleyball teams.

Personally if we had a men's team for soccer I wouldn't attend games. Women's soccer has that hotness factor that pull's me in. And painting your body for men's sport just doesn't have the same appeal.

if i went to mens soccer it would only be because im one of the most loyal A&M sports attendees ever... the thing that got me to womens soccer in the first place was living at callaway freshman year with the ladies... of course ill be at the ASComplex 2 hours early today to get front row seats, but only for the ladies. prolly wouldnt go to mens soccer.

dont like the sport of soccer, just when the ladies on our team play it. so if it was a bunch of dudes playin... nah

Title IX is quite confusing. You don't split money down the middle by any means, you must simply offer comparable opportunities for men and women to participate in intercollegiate athletics. Because it is so vague, Title IX is often extended to areas that it was never intended to be used.

For instance, and my high school, we have had a great baseball program for decades, they always make the playoffs, went to the state tournament 3 times in my 4 years of high school. But our stadium was crap, metal grandstands with wooden bleachers. The baseball boosters had been working for years to raise money to build a new seating area, but the distrist did not let them, because softball, which had never made the playoffs, brought up title ix, and would also demand a new stadium. Years later, the district passed a bond election for major improvements at the high school, which included redoing both fields. Baseball was VERY nice, green metal bleachers, totally covered seating for 1500, along with a press box, elevator, and red brick facade. The softball team received the same green metal bleachers. None of the other amenities, but very nice for a high school softball team. They demanded that they get covered seating, a press box, and an elevator (going to the top of the seats was basically the equivalent of going up 1.5 flights of stairs. Because they threatened title ix, they got it. Now the baseball boosters had all this money, and wanted to build indoor batting cages. The district said if they built them then the softball team would have to have access as well. Because there are already 3 baseball teams that need access, this was not doable with the money they had. they did donate a very nice new scoreboard, but it's frustrating to see title ix used in this way. Instead of moving women's programs forward, it more often holds men's programs back.

I thought Title IX applied to college sports.

the odd thing about title IX is that is should not, by a strict reading of the statute, apply to college sports since the athletic programs themselves do not recieve federal aid- just one in a long line of strange political rulings by the Supreme Court

not saying i dont love women's athletics, i enjoy them greatly, but Title IX should not apply

Actually it would take about 3 women's sports to balance it (per a former A&M asst. AD).

We do have a National Championship men's club team, do we not?
dubag

The Men's club team would get KILLED by most good college soccer programs. That's including D3 programs.
