from KU Forward Caroline Smith, following the 3-2 loss to A&M:
quote:
“We absolutely killed them all over the field,” Smith said. “Last year when we beat A&M, I felt like it was more of a back-and-forth game. This year I felt like we were all over them. We come away with a loss, but there’s no doubt to anybody who watched this game we were the better team.”

C'mon Caroline, take it like a grownup. Scoreboard.

if they were the better team, they wouldn't have allowed three goals.

Actually, I can see where her statements could be true, I have seen it before in soccer where one team controls the game and just can't finish where the other team scores some goals on quick counter-attacks. HOWEVER, looking at the stats...the shots and corner kicks and most importantly, the final score...they all point otherwise. Looks to me like A&M had a much better game with more possession on the offensive end. This girl is just sad they got beat by the elite!

don't really mean to make a debate on this...but I would think the team that scored on those "quick conter-attacks" would be the better team...because the point of the game is to score goals, not "control the game". if you can't finish, you're going to have a hard time arguing that you're better when the other team is scoring all over you.

Great teams win on there bad days. It sounds like we were a little off during the game and we came away with the win. That's what great teams do. Winning on the road in the Big 12 is a hard thing to do. Great road sweep!!!

Every shot not taken is one less possible goal. Ags won hands down.

I was at the game, watched every second of it and I can tell you that she must have taken some serious "lose track of reality" pills sometime around gametime.

KU dominated the last 10 minutes of the 1st half, and played really well for a 5 minute stretch of the middle of the 2nd half... On the other hand the Ags dominated about 60 minutes... About 15 minutes of the second half was touch and go for both teams.

The Aggie defense looked very tired, but in reality the score should've been 8-4. Spisak made two great saves in the 2nd half, and we hit about 4 posts/cross bars, including one that hit the underside of the bar and part of the net, but never completely crossed the line. The girls started celebrating thinking it had gone in, and KU cleared it, but we could (and should) have finished it easily.

If you were to say that KU dominated that game with milk in your mouth, you would shoot it out your nose as you laughed. It's just ridiculous.

Not necessarily, take for example our USA men's team 1998 game against Brazil where we won 1-0 on a quick counter attack goal. Keller made so many incredible saves that day. Brazil controlled the game. If you think the USA had a better team, you are fooling yourself.

So, as I said above, the final score does not ALWAYS dictate who the BETTER TEAM is. I think that you can find this to be true in any sport. And as I said also, looking at the other stats from the game, I would conclude that A&M was much better in this game and that the KU girl's comments were ridiculous. But only basing it on the final score is not always right.

Better team at what? I think that the final score always dictates who the better team was that day. You use Brazil/US as an example. Consider the fact that they may have been better at passing and ball control but we must have had a better defense since they didn't score and our offense was adequate enough to strike at the right time and get us the game winner. Stats don't always tell the story but the score sure does.

That is some of the most ridiculous crap I've ever read.

The final score tells you who the winner is, but often referees, luck, etc. plays a huge role in determining the winner.

Bottom line is, one team wins, one team loses... Don't be a loser. ...and if you are, don't ***** and moan about it to the media.

randy828,

you're referring to a team being the "better team" in the long run...or over the course of the season. the KU player was referring to one game...which is what I was talking about. the better team for one game is the one that will score the most. if you get beat 4-0 or 2-1, the other team was better. as for the "better team" in the long run, that is different. yes, Brazil is 98 was better than the US in 98...but the US was the better team for that game. i think we're saying the same thing here.

Soonerborn, no, our defense was not better in that game!! Keller made so many incredible saves in that game. Now, does that make our TEAM better than their TEAM?? Ok..how about another example for you. The 1972 US Olympic team game vs USSR. They won..the final score. Would you say they were the better team??? As Sean 98 pointed out...I think the referrees had something to do with that game. And I am not only looking at the stats:

Randy, I would say that the win over Brazil did make our TEAM better than their TEAM that day. A team is only as strong as it's weakest link. Keller being an exceptional goalkeeper, stopped all shots that came to him. Brazil's goalie ovbiously did not. I still say that score is the only way to determine the better team that day.

Here's an interesting situation. How many of you remember this game:
http://sports.tamu.edu/sports/games/boxscores/WSO_229_nov23.htm

We were at UCLA for the Sweet 16 in 2002. They outshot us 21-0 and had an 8-0 corner kick advantage but we won the game on penalty kicks in triple overtime.
So who was the better team that day? Them, us, or Kati Jo Spisak?

I remember what Coach G. said to their coach after that game: "Sometimes life isn't fair."

You're right. Most people who watch or play soccer, or hockey for that matter, knows this to be true- I was surprised anyone even questioned that...

Finally, a quick look at the stats does show she is either full of it or didn't have a clue what happened out there.

I would say there that they teams were equal. I have always despised pk's deciding a winner. I understand why they are necessary in a tournament but I don't believe that it truly determines a winner.
