What are your thoughts? Classless? or all in good fun? I've always enjoyed yelling at the other team's goalie in soccer... as a senior I prefer to sit down and heckle than to stand up and yell. I like starting the game behind one goal and following the other teams goalie to the other end of the field for the next half. And I really think that it gets into the goalies heads, if only because they are not used to the number of fans that show up to all our games or that the fans just don't sit there and quietly watch the game. However during and after the BU game I saw the BU goalie sobbing. I felt bad for her but I'm glad that she was off her game and the ags won handily...

I don't think its so much classless as annoying and pointless. That, like beeping when backing up , is a baseball and softball tradition. Leave it there. I seriously doubt that yelling the golie's name everytime she punts is going to throw her off. Now if she just did something stupid you can point that out, but otherwise concentrate on what is going on on the field.

I think it's funny, and I do think it probably is somewhat effective.
And while that is kind of sad to hear that the goalie was crying afterwards, it was probably more because they lost than anything that was yelled at her. Just don't be offensive if you're gonna do it.

I will start off by saying that I am very biased on this topic. That being said, what you yell at the keeper is more important than whether you do it or not. Most of these young ladies have had things yelled at them during games. If anything, it usually fires them up rather than hurting their play. Personal insults are not acceptable in my opinion in any case.

My daughter will be one of those opposing keepers over the next few years and I will be in the stands. Rest assured that if I hear something that crosses the line I will come over and politely ask you to check yourself. She has been to A&M soccer camp many times and was reared by two Aggies so she loves the school. In my opinion it would be a shame for her to decide that all Aggies are jerks because of some idiot hurling personal attacks at her.

As for the Baylor keeper, I doubt it was something that was said to her that made her cry. Getting thumped 4-0 isn't fun and keepers always blame it on themselves when a goal is scored, even when it's obvious the entire defense wasn't doing its job.

I completely agree.

Yeah I agree, I remember this one time I don't remember which team we were playing, but the keeper carried a couple extra pounds and the fans kept calling her fat. And a couple other times i've heard they told this other girl she wasn't very attractive. Either one is very very unacceptable. It goes beyond the realm of classness and into the realm of distastefulness and I wish they'd be tossed from the game for doing that.

While getting autographs from the Aggie soccer players, I asked if I should yell at the goalie.

They ALL said "YES!" They said that KJ gets yelled at at away games, and they think it gets in the keeper's head.

So you heard it from our players, KEEP HECKLING!

wow, there are some fans brave enough to yell at KJ? Well I guess during the game you could yell but after it's over you'd better run for your car cuz you don't mess with her. Anyone else remember that game (I think it was against duke in the ncaa 2 years ago) when that forward dove into her near the end of the game and KJ got up and knocked her down?

I agree with the above posts about keeping it clean and not personally insulting about appearance. Depending on the keeper, it either gets them fired up to play better or it distracts them and makes the goals pile on. The ISU keeper certainly got fired up and kept her team in the game with all her saves, stellar performance by her.

Can't wait for the NCAA and for our homefield advantage if we make it to the final.

Heckling the opposing keeper is fine. That does have the potential to break her concentration. Mindlessly yelling her name when she is going to punt the ball isn't.

I've said this all before, so I'll summarize. Yelling at the opposing goalie when the ball is on the other side of the field isn't going to do anything to break her concentration as she has nothing to concentrate on. Pay attention to the game, cause a ruckus when the ball is on their side of the field because when it's on our side, yelling at the goalie isn't going to bother them, if anything it will distract KJ and interfere with the orders she's barking out. Pay Attention To The Game, Kids.

I saw some games at West Texas A&M about 5 years ago. They had a "couch crew" who brought out a couch to the game to sit on while they mercilessly hassled the opposing goalies throughout the game, it definitely threw them off.

It usually started off with friendly banter trying to engage the goalie in conversation and make sure they were within earshot, after that it was on. The funniest exchanges I can remember were calling the long blond-haired goalie "nature boy". Nothing profane but definitely funny and distracting to the goalie.

Someone needs to inform the fans not to yell when WE have the ball. That can't really be helpful.

I say yell whatever you want. If you really cross the line, it will be obvious by the reactions of the people around you, and you'll have to re-evaluate whether you really want to be that much of an ass for the rest of the game.

People shouldn't play competitive sports at this level if they don't want their feelings hurt. It's irrelevant whether they are men or women.

| i totally agree...if u want to play at this level, u cant let what a few fans get to you...women want to be treated as equals until it inconvinces them...if someone crosses the line, people around them will let them know...the same thing goes for softball and baseball games...if you cant handle a person in the stands yelling your name, then you dont belong on the field at this level

The point I was trying to make earlier is that if you offend ME (a non-player at this level) I will tell you so. As a father of a female I will not stand by in ANY situation and allow crude comments about my daughter or ANY female to go uncontested. And to be honest, my feelings on this not only stem from being a parent of a player but also from being an Aggie who would like to see his school represented by rabid but classy fans.

Hey, I agree that a player needs to be able to handle things being yelled at them, although I don't think we were talking about "yelling their name". I actually discussed this with my daughter last night after being on this board. She said she can hear crap being yelled at her when the ball is on the other end of the field, but when she's organizing her defense or making a play everything else gets automatically tuned out.

stillmerk, soccer is bacwards from everything else in that the QB is actually on defense. We yell when we are attacking so that the goalie cant make adjustments in the defense. If we yelled when the opponents were attacking, our goalie wouldnt be able to make adjustments and our W-L would be more like 2-16 then 16-2.

Sorry, you're right. When you're on offense you don't say anything.

As a former keeper, I'll say that I never really cared when people were yelling at me. You do hear it though, and if you've got rabbit ears it can definitely take you out of your game.

The best time to yell at the keeper is when the ball is on the other side of the field. Their concentration level is down, and they are more likely to hear what you're saying. A good keeper will be 100% focused when the ball is on their side of the field and won't hear a word you say.

I say give 'em hell.

As a former keeper, we do hear it. It can get annoying and as long as its clean I think we should do as much as we can. Nothing too insulting but like chanting a goalies name in hockey (especially after a goal) it can affect the game. And most soccer players definitely want any however minute advantage they can get so I say do it.
