From BB WW.

Laurie, who was extended five years, is hopeful of a strong second half of the season, starting tonight with a match at Baylor. They return home next Wednesday night against Nebraska. Laura Jones became the career leader in kills last week with 1,784 and counting.

Not sure about that one. I'm not saying we need to get rid of her this year or anything but with the team's performance I wouldn't be giving her a 5 year extension either.

I'm sure there's a reasonable buy out, but it should help her recruit. She's got a reasonable record. Nothing earth shattering, but I think she's worth giving her some more shots.

hey 04, why don't you go look at the banners in G. Rollie and see how many were there before she got here.

She has been outstanding at A&M. She has built a great program. Obviously, this is probably her worst year at A&M. Coming into the year, she was 278-104 with top 25 finishes for 9 of the last 10 years.

Hey, I'm happy for her. She deserves it. It's been a tough year this year, sure, but she really does deserve it. I mean, she is the "winningest coach in A&M history". (I'm pretty sure that's how they announce her at every home game.)

I'm admittedly over sensitive to contract extensions at the moment RE: Fran's last year. I just have a hard time justifying a 5 year extension to any coach having a disappointing season. A contract extension should be something you use as encouragment and reward for results on the field in all sports.

the positive monetary reinforcement has worked in the short term as the team beat Baylor in Waco after losing to them in CS last week.

Interesting. The Corbellis have certainly done well overall, and bqce is right that it's easier to get recruits to commit when they know the coaching situation will be stable. In football I think most prospects pick the best school/program where they can get a scholie, but in volleyball you're almost always picking the coach that makes you feel both comfortable and excited.

I am a little surprised that it's a five-year extension, though, especially given recent troubles. Yes we have a young team this year, but unless the young'uns really step it up next year, we will struggle in conference. And since Nebraska is pretty well set up for a three-year reign of terror, we'll need a strong showing against the rest of the Big12 in order to be ranked well nationally.

In related news, Jerritt Elliott (at tu) received a 3-year extension in late September, but if they don't win at least one Big12 championship or advance to the Final four by the 2008 season I expect he'll be put on very short notice.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but this contract extension was probably in place before the team's troubles this year. It looks like it was just approved by the Board of Regents which means that it's probably been in the works for a while and it has gone through all the other necessary steps before finally making it to that point.

I don't get this one at all. I'll be the first one to agree that over the course of her tenure here, Laura has done a nice job. But I simply can't see the logic in granting a 5-year extention to any coach who is coming off the kind of season we had this year. Maybe do 2 years and then take another look. This just doesn't make sense.

I for one will defend the Corbelli's until the very end. Not only are they great coaches, they are quality individuals. Losing players to injury and graduation always hurts, but Lexy and Melissa were big parts of the team and very hard to replace. I'm sure Laurie expected more outta here players, but you also need to look at the quality of play in the Big 12. It use to be that Iowa State, Oklahoma, Kansas and Baylor were automatic wins...with Tech putting up a fight every now and than. Now, that's not the case. All the teams are getting better and the lower rung teams are starting to improve and show signs of life. Also, when you compete in a conference with a National Power like Nebraska, everyone is scrambling to get better players. It's hard to find that one player that will make the difference. When Jones and Munsch were togather, the team should have done more, but Jones was so off and on that it hurt the team. Now the burden of the team is on her and she is still too sporatic. Plus, no one has stepped up to fill in the gap. Next year could be even worse for A&M if Laurie and John are unable to recruit some top notch players. They will get it turned around. An off year is expected every now and than. Remember the two teams that made it to the elite eight? The follow year, both teams struggled in the Big 12 and exited in the 2nd round of the tournament. Don't worry...Laurie will get thinks back to normal quickly. The contract extention is just a vote of confidence from BB who really likes the job the Corbelli's are doing. Granted, he did the same with Melvin Watkins and look what happened there, but I don't think that will happen here.

Okay, I've been biting my tongue on the issue of repeat postseason underperformance, but Blacque Jacque brought up the seasons in question, so...

In 2001 we went to the EliteEight before losing to... eventual National Champ Stanford.
In 2002 we went to the second round before losing to... eventual National Champ USC.
In 2003 we went to the Sweet Sixteen before losing to... eventual National Champ USC.

In those years we had some awesome individual talent on the roster, and they played well together as a team. In the BigXII, Nebraska was down (relative to their history), and both Texas and Kansas State had coaching turnover and were rebuilding. Those would have been the years to get it done, take a conference championship, and push through to the Final Four.

Now, for 2001 there's not much to say, because we swept every opponent until we ran into Stanford aka "Logan Tom University." There's no shame in losing to them on their home court that year, but I believe we would have beaten anyone else (except Long Beach who had Tayyiba Haneef, Cheryl Weaver and Brittany Hochevar all at the same time, LOL.)

But 2002 and 2003, yes we lost Lauren Moscovic, one of the best setters to touch a volleyball at any school in the last eight years, but Lexy was no slouch either and we still had a front line full of killers. So why couldn't we return to the Elite Eight? We ran into USC, aka "most monstrously powerful Division I volleyball team to ever take the court." They hardly broke a sweat against anyone those two years.

And why did we get sent to LA to face USC in only the second round in 2002?
Because we fiddle-farted around and lost to unranked Missouri and COLORADO, fell out of the AVCA poll, and were punished with bad seeding in the tournament bracket.

Similarly in 2003, an error-filled loss to unranked Michigan in the preseason set the tone, and we had subsequent losses to unranked Texas, Kansas, and Colorado, barely beating those last two in 5-game matches on our own court. Again, welcome to the bracket with the #1 seed. I've seen a tape of our loss to USC, and it's obvious that we would have gone to the Elite Eight and very possibly the Final Four if we had been in a different bracket.

I remember in press coverage of the matches and of the NCAA bracket release, Laurie Corbelli herself said the responsibility for the woeful seeding came from "not doing what we needed to do in key matches of regular season play".

As an Aggie fan, those were two very frustrating years to watch, knowing that we could make school history, go to Final Four, and earn national respect (which of course helps build the recruiting base for the next few years.)

I guess my point is that I'm re-experiencing some of that same frustration watching this year, when our roster quite frankly wouldn't match up to the squad from several years ago -- plus the bonus of having home court advantage all the way through the Elite Eight, and we just don't look as though we're gonna take advantage of the opportunity. We're practically begging the NCAA committee to send undefeated Washington here for the Regional, assuming we even advance that far.

Anyway... humor a senile fan with too many historical stats running through his head. I'm not trying to lay blame on the coaches; in fact I think 2002-2003 was really the whole team's responsibility, and Laurie did all she could do short of getting out there herself and showing them why she has an Olympic medal and was MVP one year in the pro league that ran for a few years in the late '80s.

I want to see Texas A&M at the top of the ranks, and I do believe that Laurie and John have the ability to get us there, but I hope this year is a fluke and doesn't in retrospect show itself as part of a downhill trend.

How many Big-12 Championships have we won?

Are we getting closer, or further away, from winning one?

How have other, smaller school's programs passed us by?

Of the 3-4 recent contract extensions, I consider the one the wisest.

We have never won the Big12.
Nebraska has won every year except for two (Texas, Kansas State).
quote:

Our Big12 record:
1996 - 3rd
1997 - 4th
1998 - 4th
1999 - 2nd
2000 - 4th
2001 - 2nd
2002 - 5th
2003 - 3rd
2004 - 4th
2005 - At this point we can finish no higher than 4th, and that assumes an unlikely win over Nebraska.

Whether we're closer to being Big12 Champs depends on your baseline -- are you talking about since Corbelli took over (the answer is yes) or since our best series in 1999-2001 (the answer is no). I'll stand by the opinion I wrote a few weeks ago that since 2002 we've not been getting the recruits we need to be strong in the Big12 and competitive nationally.

quote:
How have other, smaller school's programs passed us by?

In the Big12? Not really. Other than Nebraska, the other decent Big12 programs - KSU, Texas, Missouri, Colorado - all take turns jumping from 2nd to 5th.

Edit: Ohhh... I missed the "How" on that last question. IMO it all comes down to spreading the recruits around. Honestly I'm not sure if the historically weaker programs have passed us by or if they've caught up, although that's my guess. Of course, nobody has passed us by in the sense of challenging for the Big12 crown. That's still the Huskers...and then everybody else. My only concern is that Jerritt has brought some outstanding recruits to Austin (Lord help us if he gets Megan Hodge to sign - although rumor is she's leaning towards Florida), and given the name recognition and deep pockets there, it's not a far stretch to imagine their program really taking off and sitting in the national top10 the next few years while we struggle.
