I have a feeling this might happen as well.

The host country losing in the opening match to a pretty average CONCACAF team? That would rank among the top 5 upsets in WC history if it were to happen.

I don't think it will happen but I wouldn't be surprised to see Costa Rica sneak into the 2nd spot in the group.

One of my favorite games from the last World Cup was the Ticos vs Brasil. Talk about an exciting offensive show! It was 3-2 in the second half until Brasil scored two quick goals to pull away. I was impressed by Costa Rica..but I can't imagine that Germany will let them open up the game. I hope they do win just to give the CONCACAF more "cred".

How about that? Favorite games from last World Cup? Did we have a thread on this already?

Mine would be:

US over mexico.
US loss to Germany (I thought that was our best game played..Khan made the difference)
US over Portugual
Brasil over Costa Rica
Brasil over England

randy828- I enjoyed that match as well. If you look back at '02, the Ticos may have been the only team that flat out attacked Brazil. And while CR did not defend very well, it was nice to see a team not play in awe of Brazil for a change. As I recall, CR missed a few good chances too.

As for an upset, I don't see it happening because host teams always catch the "breaks". With that said, I could see the Ticos making a match of it.

I hate Costa Rica...

I loved that Costa Rica/Brazil match also, although I think that sometimes you need to know who you're playing against. Going up and down the field with a team that has more/better finishers probably wasn't the best strategy for Costa Rica.

I tell you, the Ticos are pumped for this game. I got back from a week in Costa Rica on Saturday night. There's an incredible amount of support for the team all over the country. Government employees are being given half a day off to watch the game, 10am local time (and most probably won't return to work afterwards), and most private businesses will be closed as well. They've even made an "official" opening match t-shirt that they're selling all over the place. I wish I could be down there to watch this game, after seeing how pumped they are for it. Win or lose, I'm sure there's going to be a lot of fiestas on Friday.

The Germans have, for whatever reason, had some bizarre first round performances at the World Cup. In 1982 they were beaten by Algeria 2-1. In 1986, a ridiculous back pass towards the keeper, gifted Uruguay a goal in a 1-1 draw.

The most bizarre result? 1974 in West Germany. They had the only West Germany vs East Germany match in the last group game. The East Germans won 1-0.

So if the Ticos pull the upset on Friday, it wouldn't surprise me. They'll be underdogs, so they can come out and play loose.

I went to costa rica last summer on a medical mission trip. awesome country. we even got to watch their league final in a bar which was NUTS.

at one point I yelled "GOLAZO" after one of the teams scored, and this dude rooting for the other team started yelling at me in spanish. I was scared I would get gutted.

Corners, I can't stand the Sele tica. That country is full of some the most arrogant people in the world. I get so much satisfaction every time I see them lose.

Jackal, you might be surprised by the way they take their trip to the Cup but that's the way it is for virtually every country represented in the Cup outside of the US.
