What has happened to American tennis?

Every American is out of Wimbledon. At the French, that's expected, but on grass? That era of Sampras, Chang, Courier and Andre was great. Now we are left with what? Roddick? Please. Blake? Seems to be the best one right now, but that's not saying much. He's too inconsistent. Fish? Ginepri? Dent? Flashes of brilliance, too inconsistent.

On the women's side, the Williams sisters are always hurt, Davenport the same and close to retiring, Seles is gone, Capriati probably not coming back. Perry, Jackson, that's about it in the top 60 or so right now. They haven't shown the ability to win any big matches.

So, where does that leave the US? I read today that Serbia had 3 players combined left in Wimbledon, heading into today, while the US had only 1. Belgium, a tiny little country, has 2 of the top 3 women's players. In a country the size of the US, with all the great history and tradition, why hasn't the US been able to reproduce the magic? Is it a case like soccer, where our best athletes play other sports? I can see that in the men's game, maybe, but women's tennis is the premiere women's sport in the world, yet we have no one after the current crop of great ones who are getting old and always injured.

I believe it is a part of the whole lets recruit foreign players in college deal. Right now if you get out of high school there are very few options. College tennis for the most part has abandoned US players for the other side of the pond.

While I agree there are too many foreign players playing college right now(I think a limit should be put on how many can be on one team), the very best players on tour never went to college. Very few of the collegiate stars ever make a dent on the pro tour. The US is failing in the junior ranks and I don't know why that is.

The lack of success of this thread should tell you a lot about what has happened to tennis in America.

First, nobody gives a crap.

Second, nobody gives a crap.

Third, Capriati is fat.
