I watched the game last night and it wasn’t even close. DC won 4-0 and it could have been much worse. DC looked crisp in passing, organized with good attacks and ball possession (aside from a few lazy passes in the midfield) their defense was top notch. I really like Erpen. Adu was dazzling, he made some runs and moves that were wonderful, not the least was his goal, but the best got him around three players and a hard shot on goal that the keep couldn’t hold on to, though the rebound just missed the post.
Aside from the first 15 min of the second half, DC dominated the game. Celtic looked lost with no shape or attack, they were just kind of aimlessly running around without a clue. If you didn’t know which teams were which you would have said the DC was the European team and Celtic was the pool MLS team.
A few mitigating circumstances- it was hot and very humid in DC last night and it rained right before the game started. DC is more used to this weather than Celtic, although there were unlimited subs for the friendly and Celtic didn’t take advantage to get some fresh players on the field until very late in the game.
Celtic is starting their season and DC is in the middle of theirs so match fitness is a concern, but c’mon Celtic is one of the better teams in Europe! A 4-0 defeat shouldn’t happen like that and besides DC started the game without their #1 keeper and goal scorer, most of the starters were out by the 60th minute when it was still 1-0 and all of the starters were out by the 75th minute
And finally the pitch wasn’t in great shape due to the baseball markings, although I don’t think this was much of a factor
All in all a good game I thought and I was happy to see a good MLS team take apart a good European team
