Last year was a tough season, but the nice recruiting class coming in seems to have fans excited about the future. I really enjoy volleyball but I'm usually only able to attend two or three matches each season. And goodness knows there's very little info in the press.

So my question is for those who are able to follow our ladies more closely than I am. What are the realistic and/or hopeful expectations for the approaching season?

We have some great hitters coming in, but in my opinion what the team needs most is a top-notch setter. You can have all the firepower in the world on the floor, but your hitters are only as good as your setter. The setter is the most common MVP recepient at most tournaments in the women's game, and if you look at the history of the sport, the national champions have almost always had a setter who was a top 5 recruit out of all positions. The setter is involved in every play and has the best sense of the weaknesses in both your offense and your defense. It's no coincidence that many of the top coaches in the last twenty years, Shoji, Haley, McLaughlin, Banachowski, were setters themselves. And it's no coincidence that the best years for the Aggie program were those led by Jenna Moscovic, who had beautiful technique and the game instincts to give her attackers great options.

In my opinion, Corbelli focuses too much on the big outside game, which can do okay in a Big12 conference known for its Russian-style gameplan. But the women's game has gotten faster and more diverse than it was in the eighties, and the (Pac10) teams that go deep in the NCAAs are generally teams with very fast transition games and multiple attacking options that keep the opposing defense off balance (witness the paddling U-dub gave Nebraska in the 2005 finals).

In 2005 Laura Jones kpg numbers were through the roof, but predictability can be outcoached, and Laura's stats alone didn't translate into Wins.

I love the roster of hitters coming in this year, and I expect the team to jump back into contention for the top 3 Big 12 spots starting in 2007, but if we want to jump back into contention for a top 15 national ranking, we need a stud setter to go with them.

Well they did not look that good in the spring tournaments. I know SFA swept us here in college station, but they have a great program, cant remember the other scores.

Yes, but in Spring they would have been playing with a decimated roster, as not only did they lose Laura immediately to her pro team in PR, but typically any injured players receive surgery/rehab/rest during spring so they can be ready for "unofficial" practices in summer.

The team that lost to SFASU in March will not be who you see on the court by mid-October. Definitely one, probably two, possibly three of this year's recruits will be starters by November. The only question is: will these girls grow together fast enough to place higher than 5th in the Big12?

The problem with starting this many frosh, of course, is that any losses to unranked teams in August/Sept tournaments may be a deciding factor in whether we make the postseason even if we manage a .500+ record.

Look at the updated information for the team reporting...they are bringing in a setter from Poland. The Big 12 is is tough stage to play on -- but don't underestimate youth. These kids will be finding their footing this year -- but I look for them to do great things in the next few.

I don't know, I just like the visual aspects of the sport.

Did not get the tall, big hitter that has been missing. Being picked 5th is very disappointing, but likely accurate. Laurie is on a very short leash, her #4 recruiting class notwithstanding.

I can't say I disagree with that assessment. I'll be curious to see this Polish import in action.

Recruiting is a very competitive sport in its own right, and the Corbellis used to have a good pipeline from USAV High Performance programs, but it seems like almost no high octane performers came in after 2001. Yes, there have been a couple good conference players in the last five years, and you can't always blame a coach when a top high school performer doesn't get significantly better than she was at age 17, but at some point you do have to wonder: if in the time from around 1996-2001 the recruiting methods were working well and the program had become a legitimate top 15 pick with nationally recognized players, what changed in 2001/2002 that culminated in last year having the NCAA kpg leader on a squad that only managed to attain postseason eligibility by the absolute slimmest of margins and then experience its first ever one-and-done finish in the tournament?

I'm not one to advocate dumping a coach after one bad season, but in my opinion the overall trend has been downward for the last few years.

welcome to texags, mama. I am hoping for the best, like you are, but I have not seen the program progess in the recent past. You may see a new coach given the opportunity to develop all of the the talent to which you referred.

Wannaggie gave a pretty good assessment. I've seen some of the newcomers in club ball as well - and also looking at those not returning - I'm thinking we might have better cohesiveness on the team.

I don't know anything about the Polish chick coming in. I do know the Corbelli's are not big on recruiting foreigners (lots of good kids in the country), but, when other top programs are doing it and you've gotta keep up with the joneses..well..you start looking elsewhere.

As far as a trend - I think some of it has to do with the ability to recruit by the assistants. Some kids were gonna come here anyway (sykora, woolsey). Moscovic was the product of Nicole Lantagne (now Welch) who already had recruiting ties. The Corbelli's have developed some "decent" kids into fabulous players - its a matter of getting them in.

I'm always optimistic about our season - and I'm thinking we should be able to meet our 5th place expectations. I just don't want to be hanging on at the end of the season wondering if we're going to make it to the tournament or not.
