Okay.
Wow.
Just.
Wow.
Last night I watched tape of the game in Austin.
It was more than another loss, it was an outright embarrassment.
On National Television.
I felt bad just watching. We looked like a high school team out there. There is no one who can consistently pass the ball. In my opinion Courtnee Rhodes should be the team MVP this year because she is working harder than any setter I've seen on what is supposed to be a top 25 program. It's so frustrating to watch because she has good speed and great set location, and a decent amount of deception in her pre-set hand motion, but no one except Hahn seems to know what to do at the net. All the other attacks behind the setter were awkward, with most of the girls not even bothering to jump and make an honest attempt. A few times Courtnee faked the ut blockers and our hitter had a nearly open net, and they still managed to make an error. There was almost no pass, set, hit. It was shank, scramble, bump over. We provided hitting practice for the horns, and that's all.
IS THERE A CONFIDENCE PROBLEM?
JUST WHAT IS THE DEAL?
There is no excuse for that many tips and freeballs. If you're gonna lose the match anyway, you might as well treat it like practice and get up there and take your best shot at every ball. Who cares if it gets blocked back in your face and you feel foolish - it already looks foolish to give so many points away without any fight whatsoever. At least go down swinging. No, don't try to nail it straight down when the block is ten inches above you, just snap your wrist to roll it into the deep corners. Work on placing and controlling the ball, then when you get that down you can try getting more raw power out of your arm swing.
Although I didn't expect a winning season based on the lack of experience and talent, I expected there to be at least a strong finish as the players developed and came together as a team. But I have seen nothing to indicate that the team has improved from September. I thought maybe it was the loss of Meghan Kainz, and they would eventually settle in with Rhodes or Kelner. But in some ways they look even worse now than six weeks ago. Lost. Disconnected. Fearful.
Well I'm fearful too. I fear the hole we're digging will take half a decade to get out of. I frankly don't see how any potential recruits could watch this kind of performance and not cross "Texas A&M" off their list.
As for the coaches "bringing A&M back to prominence" that's great, but who let us fall out of prominence in the first place? The younger fans won't understand, but do you realize just a few years ago we were ONE match away from reaching the Final Four?
Correction to SharpDressedMan, ut is bringing in:
*the second ranked outside hitter and overall number two recruit, Juliann Faucette. 6'2"
*the top middle blocker and number three overall recruit, Jennifer Doris. 6'5"
After the initial adjustment, I promise you both will start at ut by the end of 2007.
They are still in the running for:
*the number one outside and top recruit overall, Alexandra Klineman. 6'4"
If they get Klineman we will probably see at least two more National Championship banners hanging in Gregory gym before 2010. I've seen her and yes, she's that good. Imagine the hitting power and angles of ut's big girl Destinee Hooker, then add dominant blocking, great backrow defense, and strong jumpserving.
But if you don't want to take my word on these players and how far behind we've fallen, think about the fact that those three recruits are the current starting lineup for the USA Junior National Team.
And even if Klineman chooses UCLA, Washington, or Stanford instead, the very fact that UT could have a chance of sweeping the top recruits, well... what do you say to that?
