Try shooting 5 through two rounds at the A&M course. That's what Higgins used to require. You also need to pop it about 340 off the tee and keep it in the fairway.

Not even the longest pros average that.

most of everyone from my highschool golf team plays D1 golf or did play D1...and after talking with them they all said that it was mandatory for all teams to hold tryouts

Did I say "average" anywhere? If you don't think the average college golfer can hit it well over 300, you've never seen a single college golf tournament. Besides, the majority of pros don't let the shaft out very often and they still hit it a ton AND keep in in the fairway. Ashley Knoll on the women's golf team can drive it close to 300, so 340 for the guys isn't that big of a stretch.

Well, your sentence of being able to pop it out there implied the ability to do it on more than occasion which pretty much means average. And yes, I have attend many college and pro events and I would say that your ability to get up and down far exceeds your ability to hit it long off the tee.

Treblock,
I dont know about the tryout requirement, but my suggestion would be to contact Coach Higgins or Coach Gougenheim. I have met both of them and they are very approachable. If you send an email expressing your interest, I feel certain they would respond.

Having said that, making the team would be extraordinarily difficult. As I am sure you know, they have 15 people on the roster with only 2 Seniors. And they have already signed the top HS Senior to enroll next year (from Coppell).

Good luck.

You are right about getting up and down, but that also applies to the PGA Tour or any level of golf for that matter.

My point is that almost all the college guys hit it just as far as the tour guys. In fact, the longest hitters in college golf probably hit it farther on average because there isn't quite as much a premium on accuracy.

I walked followed A&M's David Tasker at the Big 12 tourney at Southern Hills a few years ago and measured his drives using sprinkler heads, pacing, etc. He only used driver five times, but those five drives averaged around 340 and they were all down the pipe. Pretty impressive. Granted, he was probably one of the longest hitters in college golf (his arms looked like a linebackers), but the guys he played with were not all that far behind him.

I think my bigger point is that most "regular" golfers who are pretty good players don't understand the power required to play competitive golf these days. They think they are hitting it 300 yards (and on rare occasions they might hit one that far), but you have to hit it that far consistently to play Div. I golf these days (or else have an incredible short game).

I had a type in the earlier post about tryouts. From what I've heard, a player would have to shoot five-under over two round at the A&M course to even earn a look for the team. I think one guy in the last 5-6 years has been able to do it and he never qualified for a tournament.

By A&M course read Traditions Club. My experience from playing there many times tells me that it is near impossible to play 5 over through two rounds with no previous knowledge of the course. The course is too unique to be able to find "where" and "where not" to hit your shots, not to mention extremely long.

id say that most guys dont average 340....i work and play with a lot of PGA guys and cant tell you how many tournaments ive played in over the last 5 years with D1 golfers...not too many average over 310....i wouldnt expect to play any tournaments except for maybe the home tourny at traditions where all the players get to play (to my knowledge)....whos the golfer from coppell ranked #1?? if you're thinkin of conrad shindler...i would like to let you know he shot above 80 the last time he played traditions and the course was not played from the tips on every hole

The PGA leader is Bubba Watson at 319 and only hits the fairway 50%.

Only 20 golfers on the tour average 300 yards

When I said pop it out there 340 I thought it was clear I was saying they needed to have the ability to do so. I never said average. Almost every player on the PGA Tour has the ability to hit it at least that far. They normally only swing about 80-90 percent at the most.

You also need to understand that the tour does not measure every drive.

Not to embarrass you with the facts, but have you ever looked at the longest drive category on the PGA Tour stats? There were almost 1,000 drives of more than 358 yards last year on tour. There were 29 drives (by 20+ different players) of 400 yards or longer. None of these guys "averaged" 358 or "averaged" 400, but they have the ability to hit it that far. Very few human beings can do that.

Again, my point is that not many guys off the street can hit the ball with the power to play college golf. Go out and watch the Aggie golfers play some time and you will lose all desire to embarrass yourself by trying out.

By the way, I have attended several NCAA Championships, Big 12 Championships and many other college events in the last 20 years. How many have you actually seen? Playing in your high school district tournament at Bryan Muni doesn't count.

The college guys generally don't hold back as far as the tour guys. so I think they probably drive it farther on average.

The same goes for the Nationwide Tour guys. Their distance numbers are usually greater than those of the PGA Tour. The big boys still need to pump it out there, but many of the courses they play put a greater premium on accuracy.

Back to the original question, I have seen so many guys try out over the years but I don't recall a single uninvited walkon who ever played in a tournament. I['m sure I'm wrong, but I just don't recall it. I know a lot of people think they are a pretty good player if they can shoot around par when they are playing with their buddies, but playing competitive golf is an entirely different animal. It's like the gym rats at the Rec Center thinking they can play college basketball (ain't gonna happen). Even when we were very bad in basketball, they has tryouts every single year and not a single self-professed Michael Jordan from the Rec Center ever made it. Chris Walker was an exception, but he also was a former Div. III All-American. He was invited on the team and never went through tryouts.

To play in college you don't have to hit 300+ by any means. Its about your score, not specific shots.

To the original poster. I'm not sure about try outs, but most college coaches would be happy to see what you can do. Its about improving their team, not limiting it to those that they singled out in their jr and sr years of hs.

I came across this topic and thought I would let you all know some information I learned today. Due to new squad size limitations the golf team will not be holding walk-on tryouts this year. A friend of mine was looking to try out and just received this notice. Hope this helps.

I attempted to walk on back in '93 with a scoring average throughout all 4 years in High School of 72.4 and the coach wouldn't even watch me play. Not that I am BITTER, but just to say that they don't have to do anything!!!

They recruit guys who have proven records in junior and high school golf. They will certainly give walk-ons a look, but unless you absolutely light it up, they are not going to waste their time.
