Rough day, but this team is very talented and once Coach K gets the lineup figured out we should be pretty darn good. Elze looks like she could be something special. Can't wait for another doubleheader Saturday!

Ag11 - Here is the thing about Bobby... He is not the greatest teacher of the game. Some of his technical and strategic skills are years behind the game today's players want to showcase on the court.

However, Bobby recruits and signs players with a "team first" attitude, a rock solid work ethic and addictive personalities. He focuses on the person. He wants a tennis player and a great carrier of the Aggie spirit. Sometimes that takes a toll on the talent level. No doubt he knows this is the case because of the team building retreats and exercises his players go through. For Bobby, he wants team over talent.

It doesn't always work. Some years the teams simply can't compete in the Big 12. But I feel that overall, Bobby's concept is a great one. The men's team could be a top 5 team if they would recruit better people, not just players. The work ethic of some of those boys is terrible...

in the college level talent will overcome hard work...hustle award and pats on the back are for sports banquets..

Maybe in some sports, maybe in all sports in certain combo's talent exceeds the team concept. However, the men's team is a perfect example of underachieving talent due to poor work ethic and young men that just don't care.

I'm not going to call out and student athletes by name. They work hard to keep the balance between student and team player. But if some of them would take thier dedication to tennis off the court as well, they would be a much better team.

I say keep Bobby around. The Big 12 Titles he won in 2003 and 2004 were won with a tight knit group of young ladies that made up for a lack of talent with pure reselience. I remember people calling for Bobby's head in both of those years. I will remember to dig this thread out at the end of the year. I'm not making any predictions, but Bobby can coach. Maybe not teach, but he can coach.

Tennis players usually have years of high quality training before college. I am amased at how much A&M's women improve from their fish year to their senior year. Bobby has to be doing something right.

It is not Bobby Klunky, don't kid yourself. Or his assistant. Several of the ladies are being helped by guys on the men's team. What you are seeing is experience and maturity take hold as well as getting additional help.

i find it hard to believe that some of the guys are helping the girls...in my 4 yrs on the team at A&M never did any of the guys hit or want to hit with the girls..and the 4 yrs of coaching mens team at TCU and Arizona not one of my players would practice with the women...if so, thats amazing bc its hard to find any guys that want to hit with girls

There is some truth to this. 40Luv could be talking about this as well... Bobby started a mens practice squad 2 years ago to hit with his girls at a weekly practice. These are guys that were top tier juniors (super champs in TX) and have big games. It was Bobby's hope that having his girls defend the big serves and groundies of these guys would make them stronger. No different than many of the women's basketball teams across the country that have a men's practice squad. It has been great. The guys step up the level at practice and bring excitment.

However, I can attest to what 40Luv said. I've seen the guys from the actualy men's team helping the girls out. Not all out practices, but more like afternoon hitting sessions to help with specifics. Both teams are tight and are close friends with each other. Doesn't seem crazy to me. Surprised Cory hasn't seen it at other places.

I can't imagine these practice guys are any good why would you waste your time hitting with the girls team..what benefit would you get from it..and dumping hard servers and groundes in the net is not good practice..woman's game is about consistencey....and I agree with hub not sure what d 1 guys would hit with the womens teams.

They do it because they have known each other for years, many Texas players on both squads, and they do it to help the ladies team because they want to help. That to me is good old Aggie Spirit.

Anna Labinsky was having trouble with here serve follow through. She was hitting her leg with her racket and cutting her shin open. Bobby Klunky had her wear a soccer shin guard to fix it. Anna told me in Dallas at XMAS that one of the guys saw that her service motion was wrong and helped her fix it. She got rid of the shin guard.

She also said they like hitting with he guys because it makes them hit harder and go for points instead of waiting for the other player to make a mistake in long rallies.

Makes sense to me, if the coach can't help, get some help from your team mates. Even if they are boys. Gig em.

Aggie11 ... just in defense of the practice guys here - they are GREAT players. A few of them could hold thier own agianst some of they guys on the men's team. No doubt any tennis coach wants consistency, but have you watched women's tennis in the past 10 years? Power is in and its not going away anytime soon. Bobby is using this all-male practice squad in hopes that after the girls spend afternoons returning big serves and heavy groundies, that the game 'slows down' once they play other women.

Practice agianst a higher level and it makes the real competition look more approachable. The concept has been around team sports for a long time, and I applaud Bobby for finding some dedicated young men to take on the challenge. These guys are regular students that have to work pratice into thier classes. They even have to be cleared by the NCAA. Technically, in NCAA terms, they are on the roster. You will never find them in a media guide, but no doubt they are a big part of the team.
