MCCOMBS NAMED TEXAS A&M WOMEN’S GOLF COACH
COLLEGE STATION – Former Tulsa head coach Trelle McCombs has been named women’s head golf coach at Texas A&M, Director of Athletics Bill Byrne announced on Wednesday.
McCombs succeeds longtime coach Jeanne Sutherland, who retired in May after leading the Aggies to consecutive Big 12 championships.
“We looked at more than 50 candidates from across the country and Trelle McCombs stood out as the ideal choice to be our new women’s golf coach,” Byrne said. “Trelle makes a tremendous first impression and then just keeps getting better after that. She brings to the table -- or should I say course -- a great amount of experience and success. Trelle will be a perfect fit in Aggieland and will be a great coach in Building Champions for Texas A&M University.”
“I have a great deal of respect for Trelle and what’s she’s accomplished,” Sutherland said. “She has great knowledge of the game and treats her players with respect. She’s the perfect person to take Texas A&M to a national championship.”
The 31-year-old McCombs recently completed her first season at Tulsa, where two of her players earned All-Conference USA honors. Prior to that, she has spent three years (2003-06) as the head coach at Augusta State (Ga.) and
coached the men's and women's teams at Mercer for four years (1999-2003).
“I’m extremely excited about coming to Texas A&M and continuing the winning tradition they’ve established,” McCombs said. “I’m looking forward to coaching the student-athletes at A&M, helping them reach their full potential and winning national championships. The support at A&M is
overwhelming and I’m excited to become a part of the Aggie family.”
In 2005-06, McCombs led ASU to the school's first-ever NCAA regional and national tournament appearances. In just its fifth season as a Division I program, ASU climbed as high as 29th in the Golfstat rankings, climbing 107 spots under McCombs’ leadership. The 2005-06 team won six tournament titles while five players captured individual tournament crowns. In 2004-05, McCombs freshman class was rated as the second-best in the nation by Golfstat.
At Mercer, she was involved in every aspect of the men’s and women’s programs, including practice preparation, budget planning, recruiting, fund-raising and monitoring academic progress. Her teams boasted a 100 percent graduation rate and 13 academic all-conference honorees along with
two all-league selections.
During her tenure, the Mercer men's program improved more than 150 places in the Golfstat rankings.
“Trelle did a great job building the program at Augusta State and was making progress in a short time at Tulsa,” Arizona State Coach Melissa Luellen said. “She is stepping into an established program built by Jeanne Sutherland and the sky is the limit. Trelle and I are friends and we will now be going head to head in recruiting battles.”
In addition to her coaching duties at ASU, McCombs served on the Forest Hills Golf Course Management Committee and the Board of Directors of the Greater Augusta Sports Council. She also was tournament director for the Atlanta Junior Golf Association, founded the Josh Gregory/Trelle McCombs
Junior Golf Camp and initiated and coordinated the ASU Jr. Golf Clinic in conjunction with the Lady Jaguar Invitational.
An accomplished player, McCombs posted a top-10 finish as an amateur in the 1996 Georgia Women's Open, then matched that effort in 2002 as a professional. She also tied for 11th in the 2004 Yamaha Georgia Women's Open.
McCombs qualified for the 1998 U.S. Women's Amateur, participated in the 2002 Future's Tour Qualifying School and was a member of the Mid-Florida Golf Tour.
A 1998 graduate of Georgia State with a B.S. in exercise physiology, McCombs was a two-year team captain and won two collegiate tournaments. She earned academic all-conference honors in each of her four seasons.
A native of Macon, Georgia, McCombs and her husband, John, were married in 2004.
