Just wanted to let y'all know that the A&M Ice Hockey team defeated SMU on Saturday afternoon, 6-3, and beat t.u. 6-3 that evening as well.

They have two more games this weekend in Houston. Good luck to all!

Wow! Where does the Aggie Ice Hockey team practice? Where do they get their players?

(I can't resist asking, "Do we play T. Tech?")

Let me tell you, I wish the Aggies competed in the NCAA in ice hockey. We have the PERFECT fans for such a sport as our noise and enthusiasm would make Reed Arena a veritable hell for the opposition. Plus, it would be a heck of a lot of fun to watch us "Check Tech" into submission! What are the chances that this we will have hockey as an NCAA sport? With Title IX, I'm guessing zero to none.

Awesome. Keep winning. Where do yall play? Why don't we know more about theA&M Hockey team? I know it's not officially sanctioned due to title IX, but I've only heard about it a couple of times.

As an answer to a couple questions...

We practice at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton (about an hour and a half away). It can be quite a pain as you can imagine!

We play in various places. Dallas (Blue Line), Belton, Houston (Texas Ice), and Austin (Travis County Expo and Chapparal) to name a few.

All of our players are students at Texas A&M, and we compete against teams all across Texas and Oklahoma including t.u., Baylor, OSU, Houston, UNT, SMU, and those damn red raiders (I can't speak for the rest of the school, but the guys on their team are actually cool).

Not much of a chance for NCAA competition because of Title IX, as was mentioned, but this does not take away from the fact that we go out their and whip some tail.

I'll try and get some more info. on here as far as dates and locations of our games, so we can see some Ol' Ags in the stands!

By the way, I would appreciate any thoughts Ags might have on the team! (even if it's just a couple words to know the words getting out.)

Do you have a link to a schedule? When will y'all play in Dallas? I'd love to go root for the ice Ags!

Dude...shoot up a website and sell some jersey's! I bet many hockey aTm fans would shell out some $$ to get one. I would. I mean I saw an orange longhorn on a "Titleist" cap this past weekend. Merchandise is where it is at.

Keep us updated on when games are. If yall get merchandising together, I know I would definately be willing to shell out some money to support yall. I'll definately have to make it to some of the games.

Definately sell jerseys! I'm in for one. Plus, they're a great fundraiser, which the club sports definately need (former Ag LAX player here).

Best of luck and gig'em. Keep us updated on the season, and hope to see you in the spring playoffs!

Can someone explain to me the effect that Title IX has on hockey? More specifically, why can't the Ag team participate in NCAA.
Hince57
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I have a vague understanding of Title IX, so here's my explanation (please correct me if i'm mistaken):

Title IX keeps a level of parity between men's and women's athletics. In effect, if a college wants to add a men's or women's varsity sport to their institution, they have to "match" it with a sport involving the opposite sex (Although the matching sport may not be able to draw squat to the school). I also hear that it can be a very political process to add a varsity sport.

I also believe that this title has the best of intentions in trying to keep a level playing field, but I sincerely doubt if it achieves its purpose. However incorrect it may sound to others, I think of it as trying to sustain the "separate, but equal" mentality.

It's unfortuante because I think it leaves behind a great deal of athletic competition, but c'est la vie! This also means that, hypothetically, a school could have an equal number of men's and women's athletics, but at the Club level (in which athletes wouldn't receive scholarships and full backing from the school), you could have 20 women's clubs, and 0 (zero) men's clubs, or vice versa).

This is how it is as far as I know. Again, please correct me if I'm wrong.

And, as a sidenote, what this means for ice hockey or lacrosse or what have you, it's a real pain in the butt to get things done. At the same time these Club athletes are struggling, the varsity men's coin collecting team (no offense to coin collecters) just added a freshman majoring in Railroad Safety Awareness to their squad who will now be enjoying a free ride so that one day he might make it to the pros.

Sorry about the rambling...

By the way,

The ice hockey team lost to Hosuton Collegiate, 3-1, and defeated the University of Houston, 7-1, this past weekend. I think it was an enjoyable experience for all who were able to attend. Please come out and join us for our next 2 games on Dec. 1 at 4:00 and 8:30 p.m. as we battle the same foes! We might even sign some autographs if you like...

My understanding of Title IX is that scholarships must be awarded in proportion to school enrollment. The problem is football. A huge revenue source but terrible for meeting Title IX requirements. It offers 85 men's scholarships that are not offset with a women's team. So there are soccer, archery, equestrian and volleyball women only teams that are used to offset football scholarships. The only way to add a men's team in any sport would be to add another women's team at the same time to balance the scholarships.

This thread has inspired me to formulate a new goal to add to my ever-expanding list...attend an A&M hockey game and obtain a A&M hockey sweater. How about the thought of Dave South commentating on the A&M Ice Hockey Radio Network..."Thats a fiiiiive minute major on the ponies for fighting."

Combat Title IX issues, by giving the ladies field hockey. Many Texas private schools play it. It's a winner in the ACC, Big X and the Big East.

Do you all have kids jersys for sale?

Have three grandkids that are heavy into the sport, and their ties to A&M goes all the way back to 1889.

Thanks

Someone needs to get some merchandising going because maroon A&M sweaters would be great gear to have!

I don't think we'll be selling jerseys anytime soon but we're supposed to start selling shirts in the next couple of weeks. That's all I know right now.

I'd still like to point out that a jersey would be really cool and profitable. I would be interested in other shirts, but at least remember us the next time you order jerseys, probably at the start of next season.

So are yall going to be selling the shirts on campus at all?
gazoo
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Someone should be able to help you guys set up a better website. Any one with a digital camera can take snapshots/mugshots of the team and add those to the roster. Some shots from the games wouldn't hurt either.

Create a link where you can order shirts, jerseys and caps. If not at the games, at least somewhere on campus, set up a table in the MSC for one hour, once a week to raise money by selling the t-shirts.

Get some old ags involved. Aggie Ice Hockey will put A&M on the map as a major international university

Oh, it would be nice to have an actual address of the places where you're playing, not just the name of the city. Houston is big, with several ice centers, which one is it?

An Aggie former student who owns a Minor League Hockey team offered to give Brazos County enough money to add an ice rink and the refrigeration eqp. to the Brazos Colosseum or Expo Center they are building. He wanted to bring a Pro team to town...and mentioned the Aggie Hockey Club could use it. I have heard no more about it...anyone know what happened?
