Auburn has a new men's coach this year. Should be interesting. They are seriously fast in any case.

Our women of course, are SERIOUSLY FAST on their own.

The 'new' coach is Richard Quick...he was there from 1978-82 before he went on to win beaucoup national titles at Texas and Stanford...it is cool to see them on the schedule though...this is the swimming equivalent of playing UNC in women's soccer

i know Auburn had a bunch of young guys transfer out when Quick signed on. Not that that will change the fact that they are still ridiculously fast, but still. The Men have alot more dept this year than they have in years past, hopefully that will make the dual meet(s) this year a little more interesting

We might have to make the big road trip for the Ags meet against Auburn.

It should be an interesting meet. Auburn doesn't always take its full A team to non-conference dual meets, but their A-B team is fast.

given the state of the two teams (auburn disintegrating and our women gaining steam) i can't imagine quick letting this one just slip away.

then again, today, if i were in vegas i would put the odds on our girls in a dual meet situation so maybe he'll just bring some weak swimmers and play it off like he didn't care about the outcome.

Is Auburn disintegrating? Going from Marsh to Richard Quick is not exactly a step down. Quick has really been a women's coach so it is interesting that he is the "head" coach (like Marsh was) with a co-head coach for women.

I wouldn't say they are disintegrating, however will they stay at Marsh-like levels?...I seriously doubt it...The time is coming very soon when there will be a new sheriff in town and Auburn will be stepping down a notch or two

I think it's a shame the women didn't swim them last year...I think we could have taken them out in a dual meet...Will be interesting to see the dynamics of the two teams and how things shake out heading into that meet in January

We have different interpretations of falling apart...I see no reason to see why they won't again be a top 3-4 program this year on the women's side...Despite losing so many, they did add some pretty nice people as well...You have to remember this is a school that year-in year-out has people that would have qualified for the national meet but have to stay home because the team is over the maximum limit of qualifiers set by the NCAA

top 3-4? this is a team that won NCAAs in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007. and you're saying 3-4 is pretty much the same? HUGE difference. i think they'll probably get 2nd or 3rd at NCAAs but it's just the beginning. i'm sure you know as well as anyone how long these shifts take in a sport like ours. guess i'm just suprised at the recent turnover

edit for grammar

So what is the deal with the transfers? Quick has more NCs than any active coach, right? Is Quick a completely different kind of coach than Marsh? Quick even coached Marsh when Marsh was an Auburn swimmer.

All valid questions Spicewood...Perhaps the more proper question would be why would Marsh leave after winning 10 of the last 12 NCAA championships (M&W) in the last six years? You'd think he had everything he wanted after those kind of results, unless...

I think Apoco might have some insight for us there...maybe?

i got nothin. i know he's getting paid a lot... it's not the first time a championship coach has left a program. heck as was discussed earlier, quick has mde his mark twice already. sometimes people just want to start all over.

Auburn preview from collegswimming.com:

Auburn University

Head Coach: Richard Quick (1st year)

SEC Finish: Women: 1st of 9 Men: 1st of 8

NCAA Finish: Women: 1st Men: 1st

A strong summer of high-level performances may have silenced some critics, but with the departure of former head coach Dave Marsh, and the hiring of 6-time Olympic Coach, Richard Quick, the Auburn landscape looks to be very different in the upcoming years. As the defending Champions on both the Men’s and Women’s side, the Tigers look to carry the momentum from last season and this past summer into their 2007/08 championship campaign.

The women return 11 All- Americans including NCAA Champions Rachel Goh (100 Back) and Ava Ohlgren (400IM), as well as NCAA finalists Emily Kukors, Kristen Hastrup, Maggie Bird, and Melissa Marik. Freshman Micah Martindale will be called on to help Quick deal with the loss of distance stars Hayley Peirsol and Adrienne Binder, who finished 1-2 in the Mile at last year’s championships. National junior team member Erica Messner and Swedish stand out Josifine Wede (breast) will also be asked to make an immediate impact. The Tigers will also say good bye to sprinting star Kara Denby, as well as, Tawnie Bethume, Anne Amardeilh, and diver Lyndsey Segraves. Also missing from the Tiger’s roster are All- Americans Alicia Jensen and Julie Stupp.

The Auburn men return 10 All-Americans including NCAA champion and record holder Cesar Cielo (50 Free- 18.69, 100 Free- 41.17), as well as three out of the four members of the NCAA record setting 200 and 400 Freestyle relays and all four members of the record setting 200 Medley relay. Individual returnees include NCAA finalists Mark Targett, Alexei Puniski, Kelly Marx (diver), Scott Goodrich, and Jakob Andkjaer. Quick will turn to Auburn’s four freshmen to help fill the gaps caused by the loss of NCAA champion diver Steven Segerlin and NCAA finalists James Wike, John Scott, as well as relay standout Bryan Lundquist. Freshmen include Adam Klein (breast) and Robert Looney (fly), a pair of Junior National Team members.

I might have to drive to CS just to watch Cielo. 18.69 50 yard freestyle!
