Has anyone on this board successfully got their kids admitted from out of state? My oldest is currently in 8th grade and will be an out state applicant. He's a white male from a good financial situation, so I know that hurts his chances. What did your kid do to stand out? Obviously he needs a 4.0(or whatever it is with advanced classes), but needs to graduate in the top few of his class and blow away the sat. Anything else helpful?

If Texas A&M was a responsible public entity they would give preference to out of state applicants and the $30k tuition.

He's definitely planning on being in B Company like his old man. Does that actually help?

Could help with scholarships and instate tuition. Best bet for admission is a very strong SAT score.

The Academic board will have better feedback with less humor.

He should start applying himself. Don't just hire some gptbro to fill out the application for him.

Mine did. But she graduated from an IB school and a 32 ACT score with many extracurriculars.

Our son did- have Hope! He did not have a perfect GPA, 1310 SAT, from a top school in our state, extra curriculars, Boy Scouts i.e well rounded. honestly one thing that may have been helpful was getting to know the TAMU regional recruiter (they have a person assigned to states/regions-ours visited the school.) kept in contact, she may have put in a good word. He did go into the Corps and the Band, which is not supposed to necessarily help but the rumor mill word is that it does help. Finally, we visited a few times-Eagle Scout spend the night; spend the night with the corps etc. to continue to illustrate interest-and update the admissions office when you do visit, or have other meaningful additions to update the application (student won a significant award, had a Christmas internship etc.) Best of luck- our son Graduates in May!

Good luck OP.

I was an out of state applicant way back in the fall of 1974. Got my acceptance letter on October 1, 1974. Wow, how things have changed. I was a B+ student with a 1040 SAT. Also, my out of state tuition was $40 per credit hour.

They do track all the campus visits to gauge applicants' interest, so it is likely doing all those things helped so they knew how *really* interested your kid was vs just an out of state application.
