In November 2017, I applied for a job at Mizzou supporting researchers from a number of departments who were all housed in the same building. The building had a lot of high-end labs and equipment, and the setup made sense. I thought that the interview went very well, but I never heard anything back from them. At the start of the new year, I called the hiring manager only to be told that they'd hired someone else. I was an excellent candidate, he said, but they wound up hiring someone who had already worked in the building. "He already knew the setup, inside and out."
Fast forward to June 2022. I'm interviewing for a different job at Mizzou. One of the interviewers happens to have been on that 2017 hiring committee. Before the interview, he tells me that he wanted to hire me but was overruled by faculty. "They hired a young woman with very little experience. It didn't work out." In other words, the hiring manager had lied through his teeth when I called him. That's been Mizzou in a nutshell over the years.
I mention it because I applied for a Linux System Administrator position at MU last month and have a Zoom interview next week. Linux is my IT passion, and I would *love* an opportunity to be able to make a living supporting it. I'm also not holding my breath. I've met a lot of weasels at Mizzou since I've lived here.
Me after my November 2017 interview.
