On Feb. 3, 1959, which would become known as "the day the music died," rock-and-roll stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson died in a small plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa.

The tragedy inspired singer Don McLean to write his 1971 hit "American Pie", immortalizing February 3 as "The Day the Music Died".

If tomorrow all the things were gone
I worked for all my life
And I had to start again
With just my children and my wife…

Great song. Rip.

Waylon Jennings was supposed to be on that flight and gave up his seat to another band member. That member lost the seat in a coin flip to Valens. Crazy how the universe works sometimes

Buddy Holly reserved the plane at the last minute for himself and his band members,

Waylon gave up his seat to JP "The Big Bopper" Richardson because he (Richardson) wasn't feeling well. Holly's other band member lost his seat to Valens in that coin flip.

Holly gave Jennings a hard time saying "i hope your old bus freezes" and Waylon responded by telling him that he hoped his plane crashes.

Don't ask me about the years I spent out in the rain
About the ones I spent in love or the ones I spent insane
Don't ask me who I gave my seat to on that plane
I think you already know
I told you that a long time ago
