The FAA has issued a NOTAM halting all flight operations at El Paso International Airport (ELP/KELP) for 10 days.

It's more than the airport being closed. It's all airspace, so no police helicopters, medevac, etc. It's insane.
And the flight restrictions have been lifted...

Its a diversion targeting conspiracy theorists. They were getting too close on Epstein, Project 2025, Chemtrails, Jan 6, aliens, AI Surveillance.... whatever else. So the government shuts down a remote airport - AND AIRSPACE! There is not a singe conspiracy theorist who isn't combing every part of the internet and dark web looking for "answers".

I wonder if the use of drones was a probe meant to see how we react, or if they were actively trying to drop stuff across the border. Why do that in the city? Why not use the drones out in the desert where there is less air traffic?
I'm guessing either aliens (the kind that'll probe you) or aliens (the kind that'll probe you, but can also make tamales).

Except there wasn't really a specific threat that required shutting down the airspace today. There appear to be drones along the border regularly, on both sides.
The DoD wanted to test some lasers that they think they can uses to shoot down drones, and couldn't reach an agreement with the FAA to do the testing.
So they decided to do the testing anyway, forcing the FAA to close all of the airspace, causing commercial air disruption and delay, as a precaution.

But the Pentagon shot down party balloons anyway, so it seems clear they were going to use the laser regardless of any agreements with the FAA.
Seems like the FAA did the right thing, and probably had to do so immediately, given the risk of the laser to commercial air flight in the area.
I think the military can differentiate between a party balloon and aircraft.

I'd hope so, but the Pentagon used a dangerous/deadly weapon in commercial airspace, after not reaching an agreement with the FAA prior.
The FAA did the right thing.
I wasn't debating that. Just saying they were probably nowhere close to hitting any aircraft.

Sorry about the balloon release folks, Inez and I had another gender reveal party and I'm not allowed to use tannerite anymore for obvious reasons. Aside from the inconvenience of shutting down the airport, it was probably safer for everyone than the first time we revealed our daughter's gender. Far fewer family attended this one, but still fun.
