A cold morning warming up to about 52 this afternoon and climbing into the 70s by weekend. Almost froze to death watching grandkid's soccer game last night in a cold wind. So coffee first, because…

As happens once or twice a year, the cold front we had move through played hell with my allergies, so I am taking a sick day. No dog walk, I shall probably have breakfast delivered.

I attend a standup call every morning with about 30 teams total represented. Each of us is asked if we have any major incidents/bridges or failed changes to report. If we do, we have to discuss them with the management on the call. Most of the time I respond "No and no," and if no one has anything to report we get through all the teams in about 5 or 6 minutes.

Management has decided this takes to long. In order to "save time" everyone who is on-call will now have to fill out an online form at the end of every shift. If anything happens, it now has to be written up (in addition to still being discussed in our standup meeting, which is transcribed). My company has so very many managers. They're a big part of the reason I don't think we'll ever turn the first dime.

Luckily I work with a couple of squeezable stress balls to my left. I can tell it's cold when Lucy and Callie are sleeping against each other.

And more complaining by yours truly. I listened to Benny explain to his friends online last night that he's going to go to Mizzou, and they have a very high acceptance rate. He doesn't really need to worry about his grades. He's said this to me (more than once), and I've told him that if he expects to receive scholarship money, grades are ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL. I've explained to him that I have no money (outside of his 529) to contribute. But he's 17, and Dad knows nothing. I'm not sure why he puts up with me.

PMs are an essential tool of any project and an asset to a company, if utilized correctly. It's too bad this doesn't happen often IME. When they just start doing busy work to justify their FTE, you get what you describe and it is such a soul sucking cancer in the office. I'm going to be honest, it is still one of the things I struggle with most when I transitioned from blue to white collar work.

Also, I woke up with mama cat smooshed up against my back this morning. (side sleeper). I'm glad I realized it before I rolled over to get up.

Sounds like you are filling out a narrative log that would be common in a plant control room.

- Saw a dog in the compost pile that we share with our neighbor across the alley when taking babydog out this morning. It barked at us and I barked back. It was not deterred. Finally his human mom called him home but he scared babydog and she would not release her poop. He might be the ghost pooper in my yard. He is now my nemesis.
- Got her to doggie daycare and I will now collapse back in bed and cuddle my humidifier.
- Hurts to breathe, hurts to cough. At least it's moving through my system. At this rate I'll be better by St. Patrick's Day.

Serious question here: have you applied as an IT guy with any local/state government agencies besides UM? I don't know if your skill set matches their requirements or exceeds their requirements but I knew people working for Salt Lake City who loved their IT jobs, got sent to black hat conferences and got the employee benefits packages (pension/salary/medical/vacation/holidays/sick leave) which kept them around.

Missouri is ranked 50th in state employee pay. I look, but it's been a few years since I applied anywhere (with the State) other than MU. I've applied to a couple of local private colleges in recent weeks as well.
