The posted speed limit is a good suggestion

I like to go at or under the posted speed limits in school zones. It makes me feel like I'm doing something good for the community. Otherwise, I've settled on either 8 miles or 20% over most speed limits. I've earned my share of speeding tickets since I was 16, but none in the years I've stuck to this rule. I don't think the rule has saved me as much as the fact that there are three times more cars on the roads with the same amount of traffic cops.

When I roll up on some turtle actually obeying the speed limit, I'm shocked by how dangerous it seems for her to be impeding traffic so much.

Most of you probably obey all traffic laws, but I felt I needed to come clean.

I'm usually 2-8 over depending on the situation, except when I'm towing, and that usually puts me slower than a lot of folks, so I'll let them get the ticket for me.

Last ticket I got was in 2004 while I was driving a hearse.

So you don't care about your community when you're speeding and driving recklessly in non-school zones? Very selfish of you.

Did you tell them that the guy in the back needed to get to hospital fast or he might die?

1. Children are our most precious resource. They will be needed to build and maintain the robots and algorithms of the future in my old age.
2. Otherwise keep your butt in the right lane.

The elementary schools in my area agree with you on #1. There's no way.... no freakin' way that some kid escpes and darts out into the rural neighborhood street in front of of the school. They're hearded like dangerous felons from the car to the building by parents, teachers, administrators, crossing guards, police, janitors, karens, principals, volunteers, older kids with badges and orange vests, secret service, and 24 hour CCTV monitors. They've never been, and will never be safer than they are between the school building and the car or bus.

I drive 5 over on surface streets and 10 over on the freeway. Ony ogtten pulled over once on the freeway and got a warning.

I drive dead nuts 20 mph in school zones.

My PR is 11 times the speed limit. Got up to 55 in a 5.

School Zones exactly what's posted.

Outside of school and work zones, most places only ticket if you are 10% or more over the speed limit. In a 75, that means go 81-82. In a 45, go 49 etc.

I go 3 mph over. Don't know how I decided on that, but I grew up with 55 mph speed limits on the Interstate. I have no complaints about Missouri's 70 mph limits. Apparently I do have a tiny complaint as I drive 73.

Anywhere from 5 to 25…depends on what my gut suggests…limited only by the slower moving traffic who stay at the speed limit and remain parked in left lane. I will abide by the speed limits for school zones and stop for the school buses.

All you people who use percentages are whackadoos.

Who's got time to do calculations when you're busy trying to endanger people's lives because you're obviously the most important person on the road?

I usually go 5 over outside of school zones where I go precisely 20mph and get annoyed at people going 19 or less.

I guess I'm a turtle. I drive 36000+ miles a year. It's exhausting to "go fast" and cut in and out of traffic when you're on the road 6+ hours a day (that doesn't happen everyday).

Most accidents occur because of excessive speed, no? Maybe the dangerous folks are the ones who speed and cut in and out of traffic.

What a moronic OP.

What's no? At the risk of voting myself of the General Board island, I'll challenge those who beech about driver like me who are mindful of traffic laws and, frankly, think those who are the tailgaters and "cool" drivers are ****ing morons.

I can see where this would annoy a bus driver or Uber driver or what-have-you. Apologies. I was just making conversation after a long drive into the office this morning.

Going 60 mph on I-10 or I-45 in the city is more dangerous than keeping up with normal traffic, which moves in the 68-72 mph range outside of rush hour. (That's between 8 mph and 20% over, in case you don't have a calculator handy).

Yeah, that's me. An Uber or bus driver...

I'm such a traffic hazard despite staying out of the left lane. People like me are clearly the problem. Your time is more valuable than mine.

Do we need to have a pre-covid and post-covid disclaimer? 74 mph on the 60 mph freeways in Houston kept me in the left lane most of the time pre-covid. Now 74 has me in a middle lane and occasionally the far right lane when traffic is lighter.

Traffic flows best when everyone goes the same speed, even if it's over the posted limit. It's not the excessive speed that's dangerous, but the excessive lane changes. If you're going slower than everyone else, then yeah, you're a safety hazard because everyone is changing lanes to go around you. Excessively slow drivers cause as much turbulence as excessively fast drivers.

Non-exhaustive list of bad driving habits in order of how crappy they are:

1. Driving recklessly or overly aggressive including tailgating and aggressive/tight lane changes
2. Driving in the left hand lane when not passing
3. People who don't drive basically as fast as everyone else around them
4. People driving too slow
5. People driving too fast

4 and 5 are basically non-issues if they aren't violating 1-3.

Had a trooper tell me 10% over is where they generally start writing tickets. Thats about where I keep it now.

Well the trooper in Milam county feels differently. One of my only two speeding tickets in over two decades of driving was 73 in a 70 on 485 between Hearne and temple.
