If we include pop punk, then these are some of my favorites:
Another Girl, Another Planet - blink-182
99 Red Balloons - Goldfinger
My Generation - Chapeaumelon
Take On Me - MxPx
Shout - Green Day

Going a little more punk:
Viva Las Vegas - Dead Kennedys
Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've) - Anti-Flag (though the original is by a punk band...)
I Fought The Law - The Clash

Ska:
Take On Me - Reel Big Fish
Greased (album) - Less Than Jake

Random no clue on the real band:
Gin and Juice
The Pink Panther Theme Song (some ska band. awesome bass lines)
Stand By Me
Happy Together
Tainted Love

I've built up a large collection of covers. Even have this album from Germany (I think) that is fully of random punk bands covering American music. Awesomeness with their cover of "Livin' the Vida Loca (spanish chorus version)".

Certainly not punk, but all of Cake's covers are amazing. Everyone knows their cover of I Will Survive, and country fans will recognize that Sad Songs and Waltzes was originally done by Willy, but they have a great catalog of great covers.

Just pick up B-sides and Rarities and give it a listen, though I'm not that big a fan of their take on Sinatra. They love to play War Pigs live.

Not sure if it qualifies as punk, but I love 311's version of Love Song.

If you include ska, then the correct answer is "Rudy, A Message to You" by the Specials.

Yellowcard? New found glory?

Some of you don't actually know what punk is.

Social D's ring of fire is what I first though of
Operation ivy: one of these days (a cover of these boots are made for walkin)
The suicide machines: never promised you a rose garden

For those social d fans, there are numerous country covers of their songs, very interested to see the other way around: punk->country

I'll admit most of yellowcards new music is more pop punk than punk rock, nonetheless they are still good and do cover songs justice.

while not punk, this is still my all time favorite cover.

Voices Carry by Virgos Merlot

It is very hard to find these days, so if you have never heard it and would like to, send me an email (in profile) and ill put it in dropbox for you.

i know you can find a youtube video of them playing it, but as for a good sounding mp3, i know it is hard to come by.

[[ok, you may now get back to your punk discussions]]

Well, that would mean Fat Mike would have to play bass better then Matt Freeman which is impossible.
