I've heard a lot of negative buzz about the finale from Sunday night, but since I've never watched it I've been avoiding reading why people hate it because of spoilers.

This is a show I've always had on my list to watch, so my question is now that people have seen how the show ends, is it still worth watching?

Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't be upset if I had stopped watching after season 4. It's worth it to watch up until that point though. I didn't hate the second half of the series as much as most people, but it definitely wasn't as good as the first half.

Definitely watch seasons 1, 2, and 4. Avoid 3 and 8 at all costs. The rest are meh. 6 and 7 have really big endings that move the story along, so I'd say they're worth watching. 5 has Julia Stiles in it so if she's your thing watch it. If not, you're not missing much by skipping it.

I agree with the other two. It started very very strong but ran out of steam in the middle. The last half of the seasons were weak. It's a decent show. Not on par with The Wire, Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Shield or some of the other great cable shows but overall a pretty decent watch.

I would not recommend it to anyone.

The first season is utterly amazing. The first four seasons are good TV. John Lithgow was amazing.

Agree with watching 1, 2, and 4 then calling it a day. If you need filler for season 3 or want to know what happens after 4 then read Wiki or something. If I could go back and do it again, I would end with season 4 and reflect on how great of a show it was with an urge for more instead of feeling the way I do now after Sunday night's finale.

Wow. It's amazing how far this show seems to have fallen. I remember how much buzz it had at one point.

I'd echo the advice above about watching 1, 2, and 4 and forget the rest. I'd also wait to watch it until after I gave some other superior series (like the poster listed above) a shot.

I guess we stopped off at a good time with season 4 being the last season we watched.

Had its moments, seasons 1, 2, 4 like most have said. But the rest is stupid cheesy acting with some of the most retarded plot lines imaginable.

2 and 4 are good, 1 is great. I'm watching season one again to get the awfulness of season 8 out of my mind.

Not really. Bad subplots, annoying characters, bad acting from the non stars and guest stars.

In my opinion, Season 1 is about as good as TV can get. The concept (i.e. the idea of a principled serial killer) is fresh, the writing & execution are great, and the overall story arc is amazing and features a few great plot twists.

2 & 4 are good (a lot of people love 4, though), 3 was pretty meh, and I didn't watch more than that. Doubt I ever will

Here is my take of each season:
S1- Great show, cool concept
S2- Lots of excitement, and a good turn from 1. One really annoying character, but overall good.
S3- I actually didn't think this one was that bad. I won't give spoilers, but I thought it put another slight twist on the overall story.
S4- Best season to me. Best acting, best story, best ending.
S5- Awful. Didn't care about the story, and it didn't make as much sense.
S6- A little cheesy, kind of like making Scream into a tv series.
S7- Long and drawn out. Pretty tired of the show.
S8- I only saw the first couple of episodes because I canceled Dish and it took AT&T 2 months to finally show up. I haven't read any spoilers yet, but I may just do that instead of taking the time to watch the rest.

By the end there is one character in particular who I can no longer stand as they are unable to say a line without crying because they are a constant emotional train wreck.

Watching it like this will REALLY expose Dexter's flaws though. If you're going to watch all those shows, shouldn't you watch the inferior show first?

I really noticed this while watching Breaking Bad and Dexter back to back on Sunday nights this season.

I barely made it to the end of S4 before I completely gave up on the show. Be sure to avoid 'Dexter in 60 Seconds' on YouTube if you do decide to watch it!

IMO, S1 was one of the best seasons of television I've ever seen.

Maybe an odd bump, but I would like to know what people think after 6 years, odd request but can it remain spoiler free.

Context: I was wondering if I would I recommend GoT to someone after the final season and I strongly would. Even though I generally did not like season 8, I would not scare someone away from it because the major story lines have been wrapped up.

I actually just started Dexter (currently on season 2) and I was fortunate enough to find this thread. Obviously loving Dexter at this point, but now I am wondering if I should continue it past season 4.

Question: after 6 years are you less jaded and do you think it is worth watching all the way through or do you agree with above posts of just watching 4 seasons and reading the plot of remaining 4 seasons?

TIA

First 4 seasons are TV gold. As others have recommended don't waste your time after.

When it was on, it was worth watching (even towards the end). Now, with so much more out there, not so much.

yes, and im jaded AF over GOT and would not recco based on last season.

Dexter wasnt all that bad after season 4, its just the final episode, really the final scene that left a bad taste in evryones mouth.

What nobody seems to get is that the last scene of dexter was a homage to one of Monty python's classic sketches.... "I'm a lumberjack and I'm ok".

I thought it was at least a s brilliant as the "cop out" ending to holy grail.

I would recommend watching it. There were some amazing seasons on that show. Some were not as great but overall it was a pretty good show. The final episode of the whole series sucked but still not as bad as GoT.

I always tell people his kind of an average wealth batman that considers himself to he a psychopath.

Agreed. I think it's all worth watching. The only problem I had was the ending.
