Yep, that's right, another Wire thread. I finally just finished the series last night. It took me a while to get through the first 3 seasons; I enjoyed the show but didn't find myself dying to start the next episode like I might with a breaking bad or lost.

Then I got to season 4. By the middle of season 4 it all clicked and came around to just what a compelling and comprehensive world they had created.

I was wary of season 5 since I had heard it was the worst, but it actually had a lot of great stuff in it, despite the ridiculous premise.

So, for me it's gotta go:

I liked season 2 a lot, it just felt like the odd man out, where the others kind of flowed together better.

Anyway, yeah, good show.

4 was greatness. 2 was different, but I really enjoyed the story. 1 and 3 are pretty equal but I found the whole hamsterdam storyline a bit much. 5 was sort of a train wreck, although it still had its moments.

When I first watched it, I ranked them 4,1,3,5,2

After rewatching it a couple times as a whole, I now ranked them 3,4,1,2,5

Complete reshuffle I know, but I enjoyed watching Barksdale vs Marlo more than anything.

Who knows, when I rewatch it again I might completely change again

Yeah, I will say, I am really looking forward to rewatching the whole series again. First thing I did after finishing the last episode was start the first one over. Can't say I've ever wanted to do that with any other show.

My sentiments exactly. I really enjoyed 2. Different than anything we have seen

Season 5 you could feel Simons personal agenda just screaming all over the screen. It was nuts. I have eased up on it after multiple viewings but it's still a distant 5th.

If I ranked top scenes in the wire and ranked by what season had the most top scenes, my list would change. It'd probably go 1, 3, 4, 2, 5

My favorite scene is still the chess scene from season 1. So simple yet so brilliantly written.

Professor Frick - Coincidentally, I also just finished the series last night and I completely agree with your rankings and opinion of the seasons. In my mind, Season 4 stood way above the others. I really enjoyed (maybe that's not the right word) seeing the streets through the eyes of the kids and seeing how their decisions made HUGE impacts on the rest of their lives. The children were great actors also. I felt genuinely disappointed by the decisions Duquan made in Season 4 and especially at the end of Season 5...

Season 2 was definitely the odd man out. It was OK, but if I watched the series again, I may just skip that season.

I was critical about this show in a post I made on TexAgs when I was starting Season 3 about a month ago and asked if it was ever going to get good. I knew at the time that the writing and acting were good, but I just couldn't really get in to it. Now, after watching the entire series and taking the entire body of work into account, I rank it up there with one of the best series I've seen.

Yup, I read that somewhere as well. That also means Prop Joe is Randy's great Uncle.

Yep. Randy and Cheese both have the last name Wagstaff, confirmed by imdb.

To this day, I still say the Wire is the best show ever on TV, and that's mainly because I think season 4 is the best season of any show on TV, ever. Season 2 is at the bottom for me because it was so random compared to the rest of the series. I didn't hate that season, but I just couldn't get into the dock worker's stories like the other seasons. I liked 5 as well because of how they ended the series with essentially the cycle starting over.

I remember a few years back hearing an end of year entertainment review by David Bianculli on NPR, and when asked what he thought the best movie of the year was, he quickly responded with Season 4 of the Wire.
