This. The greatness of the book was that it wasn't just the story of a sociopath. It was the combination of the story of the World's Fair and a sociopath.

Amazing book. I would also love to see "A Wolf at the Door" adapted. Tons of movies on WWII, not many movies on the psychological phenomenon of a cult mentality basically overtaking an entire country.

honestly, i dont see how they can capture much of the struggle to pull off an event to top paris, but i have no doubt that the white city will be pretty spectacular on screen. the true crime aspect obviously should make for a pretty fantastic movie.

i ended up reading the authors other 4 or 5 books and enjoyed them all, but none were quite as entertaining as this one.

Agree. The shock is in the glory and optimism of that Worlds Fair juxtaposed with the crazy killer. Besides the amazing architecture in the pseudo buildings, this was electricity (decision to go with alternating over direct current) too.

Yeah, the way the book was told was perfect IMO. I really need to go back and read it again.

it was surprising to me what a rapid period of technological advance the 1890-1915 era was. i found a lot of parallels to the major technological changes of the internet era (say 1990-today).

Scorsace said he would never work with DiCaprio again after their last one together. Scorsace said DiCaprio was just too difficult. I hope they make this movie. They are both the best and the book was something!

the description of sub life in 1915 was pretty crazy. leather work clothes, no showers, super humid air from condensation, deisel oil seeping into everything including coffee, food, etc.

I just watched a documentary on this guy a few months ago. total creeper. heard he would employ construction folks for like a week, fire them and get more so noone really knew all the ins-and-outs of the torture palace.

man, those poor people once they realized they were trapped and all the sick things he did to them. yikes.

I taught a history of murder class and it's interesting to get to the late 19th century. You finally have professional police forces and truly major cities combined with sensationalist journalism. It's a primordial soup for the emergence of serial killers in the public imagination. They were always around and their exploits were always part of lurid literature, but now they became famous and their crimes exposed and described in minute detail. Chicago's a fascinating case. There's also Albert Fish in Brooklyn.
