I posted this in the Nerdery too, but thought this board might have some good tips.

I'm looking to cut out cable and possibly doing a very basic internet tv package, but might even cut that too.

I guess my biggest fear is losing out on sports, especially our college football games.
Any tips?

you have get an HD antenna which would cover abc and cbs games. You can also subscribe to streaming services that offer espn and such. Outside of that it's a gray area depending on who you talk to.

We cut the cord a long time ago and were early adopters of all the currently popular streaming services.

And why is there an h in the thread title? (chord is what Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Oasis, Arcade Fire, Ryan Bingham, Lucinda Williams, et al. are/were involved with professionally).

I've been using the second tier PlayStation Vue package (no playstation required-just amazon fire or Apple TV) and we have just about any sports channel you can need. $45/month

To elaborate, if you're trying to cut costs, just pay for it only in the fall.

After reading a thread on Premium, I cut FIOS this month and went streaming. There is also a thread already in the Nerdery.

Basically there are four or five excellent streaming services that are a fraction of the cost,
YouTube TV appears to be the highest regarded. Yet I went with DirecTV Now because I have AT&T wirelss (which knocks off $15 a month and makes HBO free). Plus I got a free AppleTV. So for $35 you get a pretty premium selection of channels, free HBO, and all the ESPN channels plus the WatchESPN app access.
Yes, SECN is in there. That why I bumped to the second tier ($50 or $35 if you are AT&T)

You get most sports channels so why the worry?

People have already mentioned the streaming service options, but I'll theow an out of box idea out there that might work depending on how many times you really want to watch the games. Just take your savings and go to friends houses or a sports bar for the games that you want to watch but can't get OTA. I bet you come out ahead even if your friends make you buy pizza and beer or something.

I have PS Vue, has all the ESPN channels including SECN, $50/month. Happy so far.

This is what I do. It's got everything with the exception of ATT Southwest for Astros.

Oh yeah, and I bet your friends aren't going to get tired at all of you coming over for every single that you want to watch. Absolutely no way they'll start pretending like they aren't home after about the 5th time their freeloading cheap friend mooches cable off of them.

Same here. We also have the Watch ESPN channel, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, Fox Sports Go, etc. You can log into those with your PSVue credentials and watch just about any sporting event for WAY less than we were paying for DirecTV.

I have Youtube TV and get all the sports I can think of needing.

ESPN - 1, 2, news, U
SEC Network
Watch ESPN access via your youtube TV login
regional Fox Sports
FS1 and FS2
NBC sports

The interface isnt great in my opinion, but somehow it gets better reviews than others. On my main TV i use the Xbox one app to access it.

$38 after taxes.

Until ATT Sportsnet is on DirecTV Now or one of the other streaming services, I'll be paying for cable.

If my parents still have cable and I use their login info to watch sports, how is that being dishonest? Especially when I share my passwords for things like HBO Now, Amazon, and Hulu with them?

I also cut cord and went with DirecTV Now. My only beef with doing so, is losing Astros games and NFL on Sundays. They still do not have regional sports as a part of any available package. Aside from that I still get most of the other sports I want to see. As far as the NFL goes, for last season I just kept up with it online. But I did notice SlingTV offers an NFL Redzone package for fairly cheap, so for the next season I plan on using that coupled with DTVN for everything else. Should still come out cheaper than prior to cord cutting.

assuming your area gets local channels with DTVN (usually true) then you get decent NFL coverage. You get noon and 3pm games (typically three per area) and Sunday Night, + Monday Night, and then it dpeends who is broadcasting Thursday night.

You don't get NFL Network yet.

Just went through this. After a few weeks of research, here is what I did:

A Roku streaming stick + (plus) for each tv in your home. Comes with a remote for each tv. They're about $60 at Best Buy.

Then subscribe to Youtube tv for $40/month. You get unlimited cloud DVR and all the ESPN sports including SEC network. You get the watch espn app if you're a Youtube TV subscriber. You also get all the local channels.

It's a fantastic deal and although the format of youtube tv is slightly different than cable, it's well worth paying 1/3 for the stuff we watch. Comes in 1080p and 4K.

Because you aren't paying for the service that you are using. How do you think it's not dishonest?

No one's saying that and you don't honestly believe we are. Read your terms of agreement. Sharing passwords so another household can use the service is no different than stealing cable by splicing the line.

Thinking about dropping Xfinity and going with PS Vue...anyone know what good home internet deals are out there? I talked to Xfinity about cancelling a while back and I think they said internet would go up to $80/mo for 100mbps if I just used them for wi-fi. There's gotta be better internet-only deals out there right?
Objective Aggie

Most streaming services limit concurrent users. DTVN is two concurrent users, HULU I think is two or three, and YouTube is three or four.

So you would be foolish to hand out your passwords to a bunch of people.

Giving it to an immediate family member is one thing. But friend of a friend will cause major issues.

I'm not using it for commercial use and I would certainly qualify as either a member of the household or as a guest. Until they specifically ban it, I'm not losing any sleep over the ethics of it.

Sleep however you like. Unless you live in their house you're not a household member. Unless you're at their house you aren't their guest. Period. You're stealing.
