How long do you want to ignore this user?
Drops today.
Looks awesome as long as it doesn't get too preachy.

It's up. This was unexpected. I just saw the first ad I've seen for it while watching basketball yesterday.

Watched episode 1 tonight.

It definitely makes the point about changing climate affecting nature, but I would say it is more than worth it for everything else you get.
They made a clear choice to focus on wide shots, panoramics, overheads etc, so many of the visuals are absolutely stunning. It worth it just for those, and of course Attenborough.

"Wild" on Discover Channel (if my youth childhood serves me correctly) in the 90s was one of my favorite shows. I remember tigers and lions destroying animals and it was pretty gory.

While they lack the gore of the 90s, it seems like the brutality of the natural world is still on display; chaser snakes / iguanas, killer whales flipping seal off ice patch, great whites hunting off S Africa, male komodo dragon battle are just some prominent examples.

I had been using an Apple TV 1080P on my Vizio P series as my secondary TV. I have an LG OLED in my living room. Finally upgraded to a 4K Apple TV and the difference between 1080P and 4K Dolby Vision is absolutely amazing within the first 30 seconds of watching this.

As far as brutality in nature documentaries, I think it has shifted from being about lions tackling and ripping apart a gazelle to watching a lion not catch the gazelle and staring down the potential for starvation, which is a more real look at how the day to day life of a lion goes.

Watched the first episode last night and the scenes of the glaciers collapsing were insane. Literally dropped my jaw.

.
I would bet the quality of that LG OLED was the difference moreso than the resolution. My understanding is that, everything else being equal, 4K doesn't really matter much, unless it's on a very big screen and the viewer is close to it.

I haven't watched this yet but on the few things I can get in 4k on my OLED it almost seems like you are looking out of a window and not watching a screen. It is a little freaky.

I meant I'm watching it on a 4K Apple TV on my Vizio P-Series, not the OLED. I've had the Vizio for years, but I upgraded my main set from a 70" 1080p tv to the 65" OLED and have had a 4K Apple TV on it since I bought it.

The jump from 1080P to 4K is not world changing, but you can absolutely tell a difference in the crispness of the picture. The real change is going from SDR to HDR. That's what I mean by the difference between the 1080P on the Vizio to the 4K Dolby Vision is noticeable.

I hear ya, in many of these shows the predator just misses a kill (as referenced above), so we end up sympathizing with a polar bear that would absolutely rip the **** out of anything it gets a hold of in the wild.

Watch the 1st episode and they state that the earth population has doubled in the last 50 years, so if climate change, global warming is man made, well there is your answer.

Otherwise outstanding

Nah its the Dolby Vision. 4k isn't that big of a difference but HDR is. IMO anyway. I was shocked at how good Netflix HDR was.

I read a review of that show, written by a leftie, praising it for how preachy it was. I'm sure the footage is incredible. I won't be watching it though.

I usually watch the first 2/3rds of these shows and then stop once the preaching begins. I also agree with Seattle. Despite the better technology on these shows, they aren't as good as they used to be. The original Blue Planet is still the best IMO.

I have never seen Walruses taking nose dives at considerable heights.

As for the show itself, this thread inspired me to finally figure out the HDR setting on my 4K TV (I learned today that for some reason, on Sony models, HDR is only accessible through HDMIs 2 and 3, and I had everything going through 1) and man, what a stunning experience this show is in 4K HDR. Every single frame is jaw dropping. I've only watched the first episode, but this is the best anything I've ever seen in 4K and I cannot wait to finish.
I've watched the first 2 eps. I think i need to upgrade my Netflix plan so i can watch the rest in UHD.

Seriously, do yourself a favor and watch the first 5 minutes and last 5-10 minutes of the first episode, even if it is without sound. You don't have to subscribe to the show's POV to be awed and humbled by the beauty that they capture. It's amazing.

When I used "preachy" in my OP, it wasn't because I wanted to start a GW debate - I just watch these shows to be amazed and awed, being regularly told how we are ruining it kills that buzz.
I am actually a firm believer in MMGW and know more than enough about it, but I get enough bad news other places, seeing the beauty that is still out there is affirming and a great offset to daily life.

That and the amazing struggle of newborn flamingos are both amazing. Birds are fascinating and weird.

This could have been a multi-episode topic, but we only got like 5 minutes. I have more questions than answers.

Really looking fwd to watching this when I get the time.

I am not at all looking fwd to the dying walruses part. I am sure this isn't the first time the climate has changed and animals have had to find new ways to struggle to survive in their changing habitat. Regardless, I always find it sad.

Wow. Don't let your neighbor watch episode 2 with polar bears eating baby seals and walruses dropping to their death she may lose it.
