Inspired by the music and lyrics of Bruce Springsteen

I'm a big Bruce fan, but this has to be the most embarrassing thing I've ever seen.
I've never had my skin crawl during a trailer before.
How embarrassing for everyone involved.

This movie got rave reviews at Sundance and is currently sitting at 93% on RT.

It's based on the book Greetings from Bury Park: A Memoir by Sarfraz Manzoor, who is not only the author/subject, but also had a hand in adapting the screenplay. Manzoor is a Springsteen super-fan who wrote the memoir, then randomly/finally had a chance to meet Springsteen at a red carpet event via a friend. Manzoor introduced himself and Springsteen told him he had actually read the book, to Manzoor's shock. Springsteen was so touched by the book, in fact, that, in that moment, offered his entire catalogue FOR FREE for use on the screen when Manzoor mentioned there might be a movie adaptation.

My guess is no one involved with this is even remotely "embarrassed," especially not Springsteen himself.

It looks a little cheesy, yeah, but also heartfelt and personal. Until I see it for myself, I'm going to trust the RT score and the standing ovation reports out of Sundance.

What is embarrassing about it specifically? I thought it seemed like a good movie potentially.
I was expecting to see a trailer like that one about the guy waking up and no one knows who the Beatles are. Which I thought looked bad, but a lot of people are looking forward to.

True story of a foreign kid in the 80s obsessed with a music star....this will have a better ending than the Michael Jackson documentary.

Yeah, it's a great story. I think it's public knowledge - I'm sure there's an article somewhere about how it all went down - but my friend who works at Warner Bros (the studio who bought the movie) was telling me the whole thing, so I might have a couple of the details wrong, but that's definitely the gist of it.

A lot of industry insiders have been discussing this since Sundance. It's about a super-fan and the cultural clashes of rock music (although rock observers such as Eddie Trunk have issues with the categorization of Springsteen) with immigrant parental sensibility.

It may seem overly sentimental from the trailer, but the script generated a lot of buzz. May be worth the time to check out.

Well, Bruce has only released embarrassing music since 2009, so I'm not surprised he couldn't perceive the cringe. (Although his recent Hello Sunshine is great. Finally some good music from him.)

It just looks way too corny for my tastes.

I agree with the OP on this one. That looks terrible. Regardless of what RT says, that trailer makes this movie look really bad.

Of course, I don't like Bruce Springstein's music, so that may have something to do with it.

Didn't think it was terrible but not something I'm interested in and got bored and turned the trailer off halfway through.

Just kind of looks like an "uplifting" teenage movie that isn't really targeted to our age range. Most of us here are far removed from being a kid and first hearing an album that speaks to us.

And I like a little Springsteen, though it would be hard to identify with a Springsteen super-fan.

The surprise twist in this film comes when they play "Murder Incorporated" when the kid cuts his dad's head off with a samurai sword when the old man embarrasses him in front of some cute girls.

Then the film takes another surprise twist when moments after he cuts the head off, the kid is flooded with white light. Turns out it was a sequel to Highlander the whole time!

I'm a Bruce fan and listen to his music often. This looks like a good fun time at the movies. I don't see anything wrong with a coming of age movie centered around music.
Maybe because of the English setting but this reminds me of Sing Street which was also awesome!

I was going to vehemently disagree with you, until I checked to see what year Magic came out (2007). I'm getting old.

'Working On A Dream' was mediocre (though it did give us "The Wrestler" which should have won an Oscar) and 'High Hopes' was essentially a demo/cover album.

But Wrecking Ball was brilliant.

I'm a huge Springsteen fan. I'll state that up front for full disclosure.

With that stated, I don't see anything cringey, etc. about that trailer. Is it gonna win awards? No. But it doesn't look bad. Just a typical, fun, teenage angst, learning to cope movie.

I'm really looking forward to Western Stars. I agree that much of his new music over the past 10 years has been really poorly written, over produced crap. He needs another Ghost of Tom Joad moment. Hello Sunshine gave me some hope that this one will be different.

Finally got around to watching this tonight. Far from the greatest movie I've ever seen but I enjoyed it. There were some wonderful moments and this comes from someone who isn't much of a Bruce fan.

It was an OK watch. Not nearly as good as Yesterday but a good story. My favorite part was at the end with the pictures of the author and The Boss. THAT part was great.

Big Bruce fan - I thought it was a lot of fun. Gets a little too hokey at times, but from what I've read that is pretty much a Bollywood staple.

I liked it, and as someone that interacts often with middle eastern immigrants, the story is totally believable. I got one of my older Syrian colleagues an Elvis mug and she started crying, she considers him her first love.

It's hard to put yourself in the shoes of someone being pulled by multiple cultures and seemingly not fitting in any of them. This movie isn't really high art in that respect, but enjoyable nonetheless.

That was my thoughts too. I didn't mind the thunder road song at the market. But Born to Run was pretty cheesey. But overall great movie to watch, clean, fun, low drama. I'll take any movie that shows we all have these feelings, thoughts and characteristics that make us humans, and that music can speak to those commonalities.

Just finished this one after recording it off HBO. I gotta say, the parts which worked best for me were when they focused on Javed's struggle finding his place in a family that didn't understand him and a country which rejected him. I had no historical understanding of what was going on with the Paki/Brit relations in the 80's. I suppose this was also reinforced in Bohemian Rhapsody, speaking to Freddie's desire to establish a new identity for himself.

The Bruce parts steered too far into cheesy territory for me, but the overall story was still worthwhile.

Born To Run part was ultimate cheese. But Bollywood cheese.

I thought the Jungleland scene was very well done.
