Really enjoyed this trilogy, but thought it should have been 10 plus stories like Malazan or WoT. Such a rich story with so many great characters that felt like it was so rushed towards the end. I remember being with 300 pages left in the last book, and thinking it was going to be super rushed and it certainly was.

But now I am at an impasse.

I've read Malazan, WoT, Kingkiller, Mistborn, Stormlight, Gentleman Btards, Asoiaf, Dresden, and am looking for my next epic fantasy.

I find myself unable to read non epic series anymore as they feel like watching a 30 minute movie, too much happening too quickly. Does anyone have any advice?

If you liked Dresden, Butcher also wrote a fantasy series the Codex Aleria

Not as deep as Dresden but entertaining.

God Touched is also a good start to a contemporary series, but not as much meat and a little more fluffy.

For a break, you can try Patient Zero (just picked up for a tv show) or Legend by Gemmell, Monster Hunter International, all are the start of series, and more candy than substance, but fun reads.

If you need more depth, Spellmonger by Mancour

Abercrombie also wrote a series that starts with Half a King, but it is darker than the first law series (if that's possible)

Good suggestions above. Demon Cycle is complete. Lightbringer has been really good. The Farseer books are good, but really sad. Spellmonger is great.

Farseer series is bomb. Lots of books and tie-in books as well so it will keep you busy for a while.

I think I will do Lightbringer, farseer and a reread of WoT. That should keep me busy for long enough so that the next book comes out for Stormlight, Gentleman Btards, and Butcher

The Age of Discovery by Michael Stackpole is a pretty good series

Did you read Abercrombie's stand-alone books? They have a lot of the same characters and are set in the same world. I liked them as much as the First Law. He's coming out with a new First Law trilogy - (Second Law?) that takes place a generation later - this fall. The Shattered Sea trilogy is also really good. Dark AF since it's Abercrombie but I actually thought it wrapped up cleaner.

Edited to add I have no idea why there's a winky face. Not being snarky at all.

ETA 2 - have you read the Red Rising books? Not really epic fantasy but if you liked those other series you'll like it too.

Night angel series by weeks is really good. Main complaint is some rushed transitions, but a good story.

Codex Alera is great but the end fell a little flat to me, maybe tried too hard but didn't quite hit that epic feel to me. Books 1-5 were all great though.

Lightbringer or night angel, both good.

Mark Lawrence has some good stuff, too. the first two of his book of the ancestor trilogy are fantastic. I've not read third one yet.

I also strongly second the red rising trilogy. Probably one of my favorite series ever.

Also, if you've only read Malzahn once, reading it for a second time is like reading a whole new series bc you catch so many things you didn't get the first time around.

I've been thinking about reading Malazan again, I remember being so confused by the entire warren system in Gardens of the Moon, and didn't really halfway understand them until 6 or 7 books in. I just finished reading them like a few months or so ago though, so I may wait for a while; they're a lot to wade through.

Yes they are. I read the first five or six twice, but the last few only once. I've been meaning to reread the whole thing sometime, but it is such an undertaking that I keep putting it off. Those books are so awesome but they really take some dedication to get through.

Literally the most amazing book series I've ever read, I've never seen nor felt character development like this series. I felt like there was almost a hole in my life when I finished the last one, as it had taken me almost a year to get through all 14,000 pages or so.

Took me a year or more, too. Nice to find another on this forum that appreciated the greatness of Malazan.

Malazan is amazing but I got to the point in Toll the Hounds where I finally had to kinda put it down for a while and haven't continued.

Memories of Ice is among my favorite single volumes I've ever read.
