I guess they were able to acquire the rights cheap, and then they went all in on it. I agree, though, I can see it being a massive flop.

I barely remember it from my childhood and I just think it's a little too weird looking with the puppets to capture a new audience and not even a big enough name in the nostalgia department to get that many people excited.

My poor mother packed me and my brothers (11, 9, and 5 at the time) in the truck and drove us an hour to the theater for something to do. It was around Christmas and we were on break and my dad was stuck on some project in BFE. Basically ruined the holidays for my mom. Nightmare city for me and my little brother. Dad out of town. My older brother would wrap himself up some old shaggy afghan blankets and terrorize like he was one of those Skeksis.

Worst. Christmas. Ever.

I was the youngest in my family. My mom rented this for me, because the movie she rented for the rest of the family was not appropriate for me. I sat upstairs by myself one Friday night watching this movie all alone... I can still remember it to this day. It was at our old house in Fort Worth, which per my parents put me right at 5 as we moved shortly thereafter.

Parents of the 80s saw Jim Henson and thought it would be fine when chosing it at the local video store. I'm pretty sure I didn't sleep for awhile after watching that one character get stripped and exiled.

I bring that up because that means the production team had a lot of extra information and material to work with, so hopefully this is a much deeper story that can delve into the lore and history of the world.
1982 Urban Ag would prefer that instead of a deeper dive in to the lore and history we simply send in the corporatized private military contractor outfit from Avatar to rape said world of all it's natural resources, kill off the local indigenous species, napalm whatever is still left, then nuke it from orbit just to be sure.

Either CG is getting crazy good at looking like real tangible things or they've used real puppetry here. Seems like a hybrid. Which would be absolutely amazing. If indeed they still used puppets. Continue to love the artistry in that.
