This makes me sad. I enjoyed hearing their story last year when they were inducted into the Rock & Roll HoF.

As a kid, "You Might Think" was one of my favorite videos. They had a unique and cool sound. I miss bands like The Cars.

Their first two albums are about as good as any first two albums made. Unique sound. Seemed like a cool guy who was never in the spot light

I've recently got back into the Cars as I was a luke warm fan back in the teen years preferring harder rock.

There really is nothing similar these days to the Cars. Sorta synth/rock with just good time party music.

Let the Good Times Roll

Who's Gonna Drive you Home

Several excellent songs.

RIP Ric.

Great band during my high school years. Pumped out incredible songs like nothing we've ever seen. So many memories connected with Cars music.

And The Cars are fantastic. My first concert. Not much of a great live act but on record they were outstanding. I could come up with 20 great songs at the top of my head. Always been a huge fan. Ben Orr passed a while back, now Rik. RIp.

Had no idea he was that old. He was basically 40 at the height of The Cars popularity in the 80s. Still sad to hear.

I remember buying their greatest hits CD about 15 years ago and putting it on during a trip from CS to Longview.

That CD kept going and going, and I remembered every single song. By the time the CD ended, I was floored by the sheer size of their catalogue.

As a kid in the 80's, videos from the Cars were a big part of MTV.

And Ric marrying an 18 year old Paulina Porizkova gave hope to guys like me.

Also, never forget that the Cars were playing during the greatest scene in film history in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."

I love the Cars. Their songs will live on. What a bummer of a rock a Weekend.

He was 70, not 75. The original reports had it wrong.

Moving In Stereo is one of my all time favorite songs. Don't know if it's fair to say they're an underrated band, but it does seem that way. They had tons of hits.

These two songs were huge my sophomore year of high school. I still jam to these all the time. Can't believe all the deaths.

Regarding Moving in Stereo...

It's such a different sounding tune. Although Ocasek doesn't sing lead on it, I posted it because it's probably my favorite Cars song.

My 15 year old son just recently discovered it from watching Stranger Things homage to Fast Times. Pretty funny stuff.

Speaking of Stranger Things, I just got the fam tickets to The Who next Friday in Dallas. Was playing some songs and the younger son goes "hey, they play that at the end of Season 3 when they are leaving the house!".

Also a great producer. Produced two absolutely amazing debut albums from my high school days.

Weezer - Blue Album
Nada Surf - High/Low

I didn't care for The Cars too much growing up, but I started listening to them quite a bit in the last 10 years. My favorite songs mostly feature Ben Orr (RIP) on vocals, but Rick O. Was the driving force and primary song writer. Of course he was a big producer as well.

Not much love for Candy-O on this thread. Great title song, and Dangerous Type here. Both Ric songs. Still have my original LP. Maybe the greatest cover in history, according to my middle school self.

Sad day. No band fits "in my "wheelhouse" better than The Cars. The debut album and Candy-O were absolute greatness. Just a fun band. I agree, they are very under-rated.
Got a cool story bro...During a long weather delay in the terminal at Chicago O'Hare in '85 my SIL sees these guys waiting like the rest of us and says "I wonder what band they're in." After a minute I realize, it's The Cars. Nobody bothered them or even seemed to recognize them. Ric was not with them.

RIP Ric.

75 appears to be correct...I noticed his wikipedia page listed 1944 or 1949 as birth years yesterday but now it's just 1944. Graduated from high school in 1963.

Their first album was just nails, and got worn out in my cassette deck.

The Cars really had some "toe tappers". Probably my fav is Let's Go.

Second concert for me in "85, seeing The Cars at the Meadowlands in Austin. Sonically, they reproduced the music live very well at that show.

Snapshot in time......

We were from Victoria, and the "Madonna" look was not a thing. Too big city. But in Austin, it was evidently a thing. At the concert, checkerboard print was everywhere on clothes and shoes. And the chicks has the Madonna hair dresses and lace on their wrists. Hot chicks. Except back then, we called them "fine".

In the late 70s, everyone was scared to death that Disco, or some variant of it was going to take completely over. However, that time spawned two of the greatest rock bands and at least temporarily saved it. The Cars, and Van Halen. What a time to be alive.

It is a Ric song. He wrote it, just didn't sing lead on it.
