Hands down, "What is happening with the third Band of Brothers series?" is the most asked question I get on this board. Well, we finally have an answer, only it's coming to Apple not HBO...

I read the book that this will be based upon, Masters of the Air. That book does a great job of depicting the action in the air in very gruesome terms, not some PG-rated Memphis Belle style that hid the realities of being part of a bomber crew over 1940s Europe. Hopefully this series will capture that reality.

Minor plot change: All soldiers have iPhone 11s to track bombing runs with GPS, share real-time selfies with guys back at the base, and get in a more chill mood killing the Japanese thanks to Spotify's My Daily Mix.

Awesome that they are finally making this. BoB is my all time favorite miniseries and I enjoyed the Pacific a lot as well.

I just read the Mighty Eighth which is also about the air war in Europe, but looks like I need to pick up the Masters of the Air book and then play the waiting game on this to release. Looking forward to it!

This is a huge get for Apple. Adds instant credibility as a contender IMO. Keep getting titles like this and it could make an actual splash, instead of the fizzle most were expecting.

My Grandpa was a waist gunner on a B-25 in WWII. This will be cool AF!

I kinda wish they'd do one of these mini series with the naval battles.

I've been looking forward to seeing this for some time. Glad to see these stories will now be told like BoB and The Pacific. More men died in the air over Europe than Marines lost fighting in the Pacific.

Would you rather they completely change history so they could have made the pacific tell a similar story as Band of Brothers?

No. I would rather they tell a story with likable characters.
So you would prefer they change history, got it.

I loved the battle scenes in The Pacific and thought they were better than BoB. The non battle scenes were not very good.

yes, that is exactly what I said.

It basically was. These guys weren't characters. They were real people.

What other, "likable" characters should they have chosen? The memoirs of Leckie and Sledge are among the finest we have from that theater of the war.

Likeable characters?

Did you think that we sent a bunch of choir boys to the Pacific? Eugene Sledge was, from what I could tell by reading "With the Old Breed" and little Timmy's performance in the show, quite a typical American young man. Ditto for Leckie. But given the brutality of their experiences - seeing dead American marines with body parts removed and put in various orifices, etc - of course they would return brutality for brutality.

The Pacific theater of operations was arguably more brutal than the ETO. Yes, the Nazis did much that was abysmal toward other human beings, and yeah, soldiers died, but the Japs were a breed above that. The Japs matched and surpassed in some ways everything the Nazis did with regard to bio-testing, human experimentation, and other awful things toward those that they subjugated.

I thought The Pacific did a great job of portraying the PTO, in general, and I actually enjoyed it more than Band of Brothers.

Very true. The Germans and Americans typically afforded each other general courtesies towards captured soldiers. Towards the end of the war in Europe, Germans soldiers actively sought out British and American troops to surrender to because if the Russians captured them they knew what awaited.

The Japanese were absolutely barbaric in their treatment of American and British POW's. They earned every bit of the nuking that awaited them, not just for what they did to us, but the Filipinos, Chinese, Aussies, Kiwis, etc.

My dad's dad served in Europe and his brother served in the Pacific. Their war time experiences were both similar and very unalike at the same time.

Not really. This content isnt driving subs. They need thousands of these (and ideally with potential of multiple seasons, not a one off like this) to compete with netflix and/or they need to be bundled with something (like 2 day shipping thr way amazon does).

I missed where apple decided they were done with their content library. Or that they've even released any content at all yet. They will never compete with Netflix or amazon. Nor are they trying to. I get the sense they're aiming more for an HBO-like model with their original content, or even Disney eventually. Netflix had to start somewhere too, if you remember. But again, I doubt that's their goal. At least short term. But you have to start building quality options, as well as tell people about future releases to get people excited (like this one has done for me), not a mixture of solid programming with a whole lot of horrific unwatchable crap like Netflix does with their movies. I'll take a smaller number of quality shows over pure quantity regardless of quality.

They're doing it right IMO by preinstalling a subscriber base by giving a year free when buying new Apple products, as well as having a very cheap entry price for everyone else. By the time that year is up they'll have built up a decent number of (hopefully) quality shows like this one. Of course, they could go the Netflix route and go for volume, but I am optimistic itl be more of this type of programming. If not, I'll be cancelling after the year is up, and it'l never get off the ground.

Sorry for the discussion tangent, but it seemed relevant at the time.

Sorry for sidetrack and I owe the Pacific another watch but did they ever display much of the atrocities done by the Japs? There wasn't an episode similar to BoB's Why We Fight that I remember. I don't think they ever covered POWs captured by the Japs.

It's been awhile but I don't recall any of that content, only mention of it.

There's scene on Guadalcanal where they patrol past the remains of Marines captured by the Japanese and mutikated and tortured to death. The wounded Japanese Soldier killing the medic with a hidden grenade as he's being treated. The woman and baby with bombs strapped to them by the Japanese on Okinawa. That's all I remember off the top of my head.

They never liberated any camps like BoB for the fact none of the major characters came across them

Sort of an aside, but I really "enjoyed" Hulu's Catch-22. Strays from the source material, but there's some great moments and they use a real B-24 for a lot of the air combat scenes.

B-25 Mitchell, 2 engines. The B-24 Liberator had 4 engines....they are similar looking planes otherwise.

Sorry, I had to be "that guy"

I understand that they basically slandered they guy. He didn't do much of the deplorable stuff that they showed/implied he did.

Nice. But where will it pick up? Post war?

I think I'm one of the few that enjoyed TP more than BOB. TP was so much more intense.
